'Flooding '. in • the village of
Luckpovv on Saturday and Sunday
was extensive in_ low lying areas
bordering the Lucknow River.
Basements of residences and a few
Amin street businesses, close to,the
river, took on considerable water
and only the fact that it was
'anticipated, preyented •more sett
sous damage. Many other home
basements• in "higher" sections of
the village were also flooded from
the water run-off created by
extremely mild conditions.
Further to the matter of flooding,
Reeve George Joynt of Lucknow
advised The Sentinel Monday that
he would be recommending to
council to engage ; the village
engineering firm of B. M. Rdss and
Associates of Goderich to do a
study With regards to the Lucknow
,River boundaries in the village as
they relate to width, depth and
water carrying capacity. Mr. Joynt

will -suggest that they .take. a. look ate '
the possibility 'of 'increased water
volume coming from municipal
drains in the Township of Kinloss.
The weekend flooding problem in
downtown Lucknow came' from the
fact that it appeared the town
bridge, running under the main
street, would not handle the water
flow quickly enough.
Lucknow recently became a
member, of the 'Maitland Valley
Conservation Atithority, but not by
choice. It is no secret that Lucknow
Council opposed the proposal to
join the-, authority, but because of
the necessary majority, 5 .municip-
nlities for and '2 opposed, Lucknow
automatically became part of the
enlarged authority.
To rub "salt in the wound", the
annual assessment for Lucknow's
per. capita membership arrived this
past week showing a" figure of
$1,736.12 whictr.Lucknov,
as a. 'membership fee h i year.
Mr.. Joynt told, The Sc titm!.‘I that ,
in the ..,meetings with village
Council prior to the recent vote. on
joining ,the authority, Ian Deslaur-
iers, manager of Maitland Valley,
had: been asked f6r. and had not
produced, 'any 'proposed , program
of work on the Lucknow. River •
within the village boundaries. •
Mr. Joynt further stated, "The
authority has Shown irresponsibil-
ity in handling the .Wingham. Darn .
and othet contentious areas. There
is.no way I will 'vote for or approye •
'Lucknow subsidizing,, through ,a
per capita, assessment., salaries of
fast,buck bureaucrats who operate
and manage the Maitland 'Valley
Conservation Authority." . • • .
"We will 'adhere to the, advice'
given by our engineering firm and: ,
'finance and handle our own
problems,," said' Reeve Joynt.
