ORLEY COOPER
Arley Cooper, a resident a
Lucknow and area fora number of
' years passed away on Wednesday,
March 3rd in his 82nd .year
Mewing a heart attack.
He was a son of Haman and-
MAry Jane Cooper and was born in
Peel Township .on November. 6th,
1894.
On June 18th, 1921 'he married
Edith Pearl White.. They were
Tarried at Guelph, where they
resided for six years, They then
lived for, a time at Mount' Forest
and St. Helens before, coming to
South Kinloss where they resided
just north of Lucknow for 25' years.,
Mr. and Mrs. Cooper moved •into
Lucknow 4% years ago' when they
purchased Mrs. Chas. Congram's
home on Inglis Street.
Mr. Cooper worked for the
Department of Highways for thir-
teen years, retiring ten years ago.
He is, survived by his wife, one
sister Mrs. Betty Gowan of Guelph
and several nephews.
The funeral was held at MacKen-
zie Memorial Chapel, Lucknow on.
Friday, March 4th with Rev. Glenn
Noble of Lucknow as minister. •
Temporary entombment was at '
South Kinloss Mausoleum, Burial
in the spring will be at Mount
Forest Cemetery.

The death occurred at Battleford',
Saskatchewan of Minnie Phillips on
March 4th.
She was the daughter of thecate.
Jacob Miller. and Eliza Walker and
received her education at S. S. No.
7 Kinloss. Later she learned
dressmaking.
She was twice married, to Lou
Andrew and .later to Richard
Phillips. She had been" in a nursing
home for a few years. .
One brother Jack of Saskatoon
survives. She was predeceased by
brothers Tom, Sam, Herb, Frank
and sister Nina.

Mrs. Ken Chester of Lucknow
came home, from Wingham and
District Hospital on Tuesday of this
week, where- she was a patient for
almost three weeks.
Recent visitors with Mr. and
Mrs. Wellington Webster and . Cecil
of Arnberley were Mr. and Mrs.
Atlee Wise and Patricia of Rich,
field, Ohio and Jim Webster of
Kitchener. • •
Mrs. Fred Emberlin of Lticknow
is a patient in Wingham Hospital
where • she, underweut surgery on
Tuesday 'of this week.
Gorden Drennan of R. R. 3
Goderich is now home from
Alexandra and Marine Hospital,
Goderich where he was hospitaliz-
ed for almosi four, Months following
a leg fracture.
Mrs. 'Morgan Henderson . of
Lucknow' returned last week from a
six-week holiday. in Hawaii._ Her
daughter Miss Betsy Henderson of
London spent the last four weeks
with her; •

greatly increased by the purchase
of neighbouring systems' - namely
the south end of the Lakeshore
Mutual Telephone ComPany, .the
north end of • the ,Lucknow Kinloss
Telephone Company, and the
entire Dungannon Exchange. This
system has changed from magneto
td dial service requiring new
buildings 'and equipment.
The poles and their familiar
Overhead wires are gone - replaced
by underground cables. A' few ,
years ago with rural farm enlarge-
.tnent and the resulting depopula-
tion of the 'rural communities, it
looked like the system would lose'
many customers •but with the new
population growth in this area it is
now rapidly increasing. In
Stewart's farewell remarks he said
that he would.continue to have an,
interest in the Huron and Kinloss
Telephone which' he had served so
long.
Thomas O'Neill of the Kintail
area has returned home after being
a patient in Wingham Hospital.
Harry Hackett of Lucknow went
to the- home of his son Mr. and
Mrs. D. A.. Hackett of Ashfield on
Saturday after being in- Wingham
Hospital for a month..
" Mrs. Cliff Lowry, Goderich and
Mrs. Ewart Maher-Son, Lucknow
attended . the ' funeral of Scott
MacTavish, Acton, Ontario.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Thompson
of Bowmanville and Mrs. Wm. 'F.
Thompson of Toronto attended the
100th , birthday party of their aunt
Mrs. Wm. MacKenzie at Pinetrest
Manor last Saturday.

during the past week. Among
those attending were Jim and Neil
MacKenzie, Ernest • Gibson, the
Elphielt brothers and Mr. and Mrs.
Doug Martyn.
Home from Florida and reporting
a good trip are .Gordon Boyd, Mr.
and Mrs. Eldon Bradley 'and Mrs.
Henry MacKenzie, who was host-
ess on the "circle tour.
Neil MacKenzie and friend Ray
Hogan have returned home from a
trip that took them to Brazil and
Paraguay with the Clare Burt
Agricultural tour.
Mrs. Lillian Simpson returned
home from hospital after surgery
but was to return, to London for
further treatmel.
Ewan MacLean is a patient in St.
Joseph's, Hospital., London, where
he has been undergoing tests.
Enjoying hockey during the
winter has been Robbie Brooks,
Robert Campbell and Donald
Martyn. These young lads have ,
been playing hockey. .in Ripley.
Mrs. Ernest Gibson is a patient
in hospital in London following
heart surgery, there:
Many from the area attended the
displays and program . at Ripley
High School on Thursday evening,
which saw the completiqn of the
night school classes, in upholstery,
needlework, china painting, dress-
making, weaving, physical fitness,
leatherwork and' liquid embroidery;
when close to one hundred
participants received certificates.

Mrs. Spence • Irwin of Lucknow
has been convalescing at her home
for the past three weeks following a
week in Wingham Hospital.
