175 Gather To.
Discus. Action.
By Lynn P. Wall .
Three weeks ago, Bill -and Marie,
ark, of Dungannon decided that
they wanted •to know more about
what was being dene about the new
• seat belt legislation. They invited
those they kneW were interested to
meet at' their home. Out of •this
Meeting has grown a civil rights
o'rganization "Citizens Protection
, Association fiuron Chaper #1".
' On Thtirsday, March 4th,. at F.
E. Madill Secondary School audi-
torium in Wingham, the CPAHC #1
sponsored, a public meeting. Al.:
though .poor weather conditions
existe4', a turnout of about 175
heard guest speakers.
Among guest speakers were:
• Mr, and Imrs., Dave Mitchell of
Niagara Falls. ' Mr. Mitchell is
director of the head office of the
C.P.A. • •
Donald Hanna and Alf Hanna,
both of Guelph.
Karen Hepinstall of Elora who
originated the seat belt petitions
circulating in the area.
Eric Biggins of • Meaford, who
• recently ,spent 3 days in jail rather
than pay a fine for not.buckling up.
M.P. Murray Gaunt was unable
to attend due to ill health. Mr.
Gaunt 'contacted M.P. Jack Riddell
at the last minute and asked him to
attend in his place, but Mr. Riddell
was ' unable to attend because of
prior commitments. °
The meeting was called to order
by Brian Hallman who welcomed
the guest speakers and everyone
present. He then spoke on the
reason ' for the gatheritig. Brian.
introduced the executive for Huron
Chapter #I and then called on
chairMan Marvin Scott. Mr. Scott
explained the , meaning of the
C.P.A. and its purpose. He called
on. Ray' Hanna. Mr. Hanna
explained, the seat belt petitions.
and the fact that they are not
against', seat belts.- as a ,safety,
feattire, but against the legislation.
It' is an infringement on pur civil
rights for goVernment to order us to
buckle up.
'Mr. Hanna introduced' Karen
Hepinstall and then presented her.
with all full petitions which, contain
over 4;000 names against the
legislation. These will be added to,
over 100,000 names already on file
at the Niagara Falls office of Dave
Mitchell. Karen expressed her
thanks. There are still many
petitions circulating through the"
area. ,
Ray then called on Eric Biggins.
Mr. Biggins' feelings on the
subject ate very strong. He
recently spent 3 , days in jail to
protest rather than pay a fine for
not, buckling up. He is ready to go
to jail ".as often as it, tikes to open
our governments eyes. .
Ray introduced Garry Peitreck
who gave his feelings on the
subject. He then introduced Dave
Mitchell who gave his reasons for
forming •the C.P.A. at Niagara
Falls: A letter from M.P. Steven
Lewis was read noting the amend-
ment to the seat • belt legislation
which says:taxi drivers do not have
to buckle up while carrying a fare
for reasons of personal safety
connected with the crime, rate
involving taxi drivers.
This amendment was brought by
direct pressure by the taxi drivers
of-the;:city, of 'Toronto.
' • It was brought to the attention of
the meeting that police officers do
not have, to buckle up when driving
at speeds under 25 m.p.h.' A law is
a law. A law is supposed to be for
everyone,
Ray Hanna led a question, and
.answer period, The questions•
being answered by those , present
best qualified to do so. The
question of gun control owas
brought up by E. B. Jenkins of
Winghain. •
. Seat belts can save lives but they
can also in the right circumstances
take a life. Can the government
guarantee that your accident will
be one or. the' other? ,
Hitler thought he, could tell
people• when, where' and how they
Should live. Men • and women died
to prove his way was wrong, Hitler
tried to take away the rights of the
people, and we fought and died for
our rights and the rights of others
to remain free in democratic
cQuniries. ' Now our* own govern-
me:nt is trying to do the same thing.
It is only a seat belt now. But .what
is next?, •
Cigarettes are bad for your ,
health. • Ban ' them? -Alcohol is
detramental to health and road
safety. Ban it? Polution is ,bad.
Shut down the factories causing it?
Overweight causes heart attacks.
Ban all, food not good for us?'
Where does it 'stop?
The meeting was called to a close
by Brian Hallntan. At a table set
up near the door by Ramona
Humphrey, Marie 'Park' and Lynn
Wall, memberships to the C.P.A.
Huron Chapter #1 were taken and
bumper stickers given out, for a
donation.
Donations will be used to help
defray costs. '
A meeting for members was held
at the home of Marvin. Scott on
March 10th at 8.30 p.m.
As a 'follow up 'to that osage
orange fruit found by Mrs. Ross
Cayley of the Holyrood-Teeswater
area.and 'recently described in the
paper, Mrs. Helen Henderson, one
of the science teachers 'at the
Ripley District High School, copied
the following information in the
school library: / The botanical
'Classification is as follows - family
.Moraceae (which means in English
it belongs to the Mulberry family),
then the genus is Maclura and
species is M. potnifera (which also
in English it looks like an apple).
This tree or bush or shrub is found
in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
The fruit is large, yellowish. green
and looks like an orange. It is
inedible.
Themood, knOwn as bourwood or
boil dd'arc - is hard, strong,
flexible, durable and yellow in
• colour. It was used by the . Osage
Indians for bows and arrows' and
War clubs (used for smashing •
enemy heads). They also used the
trees as , living fence posts around
their farms.. .41 The short trunk,*
crooked branches, thorny twigs and
long pointed . leaves made it
especially suitable for this purpose.
It has a milky bitter sap. It is now"'
used for railway ties, fence posts
and wagon wheels. The wood
yields a yellow dye. Thanks Mrs.
Henderson. tut don't let the book
fool us here "the fruit' is green,
hard maybe like an orange inside.
