Bob McKinley
Resigns As
Party Whip
Huron Middlesex MP, R. E.
(Bob) McKinley last week announ-
ced • his ,resignation as the chief
Conservative whip. •
Mr. McKinley has held the post
for the 'past two and a, half years
and his resignation came:on the eve
of the Conservative party leader-
:.ship, nomination convention. „He
indicated that he would not accept
a. reappointment to the post,
Mr. McKinley was elected to the
Legislature in 1965 and has won
re-election since then. Reports that'
he would not be 'a candidate in the
next federal elections were labelled
'false' by McKinley. -
The job, has been a' demanding
one for Mr. McKinley that required
his services in Ottawa on Sunday to
prepare the plansand schedules for
the week's business. The post also
required a devotion of time, to a
multitude of jobs.
The whip's job becomes increas-
ingly difficult to execute •and still
maintain respect • With all party
members. He was responsible for .
allotting office space . to' party
members, selecting members for
parliamentary junkets, deciding
which MPs had to be in the House
of Commons to handle debate and
which • questions they -would ask
• and also to set up meetings with
delegations.
"He tries to 'keep the party
running smoothly," he said, "It's
been very tough."
Mr. McKinley' has the distinction
of lasting longer than the average
whip and party members • claimed
he did a good job under 'some
rather trying' circumstances. He
viewed his tenure as whip as a
*great enlightener and believes
every member should have an
opportunity at the post.
"Every member should hold the
position of whip at one time ` or
another to play his part in
supporting the •party," he said,
"The job should, be passed around
for experience and 'to 'let the
Member, get to know the rules.' It's
a great enlightener."
