.Public Speaking for the students at
the Ripley .schools. Preliminary
rounds will be conducted in each,
school • with the top three 'winners,
in each category, meeting in the
finals .in the Legion Hall on
Wednesday evening, March 3rd,
One winner will be chosen in the
folloWing diviSions: Grades four,
five and six; Grades seven and
eight; Grades nine and ten; and
Grades eleven to thirteen. These
winners will • advance to the Zone
C-1 finals to he held in Seaforth on,
Saturday, March 13.
The top winners of each divison
will receive certificatesJrom the
Legion, and. all twelve will. receive
cash prizes donated by the Legion.
Lloyd Wylds is the • Chairman of
the Legion committee; with School
Principals Bill Turvill and Floyd
Stanley, assisted by Mrs. Kather-
ine Collins, making all arrange-
ments for the preliminaries 'and the
finals.
Ripley-Huron Legion Branch
held another successful bonspiel
and reunion on Saturday. • John
Coiling and his rink of Sandy.
MacCharles, Carl Funston and
Gary Henderson won the top prize.
A rink skipped by Clark Coiling
took second place, and Doug
MacDonald's foursome was in third
spot. It seemed a clean sweep fer
the Coiling family as' brother
Carrick was the winner of a special
draw prize donated by Jim Elliott.

.Gordon Martin, Russ Stanley and
Lew Hilborn. The Legion is
grateful for those' who filled in to
complete the roster and to the
ladies of the' 'Curling Club and
Auxiliary for their valued assist-.

Thinking Day
On TueSday, • February 17th the
Brownies held -their Thinking Day
Meeting. Opening , gameS were
"Upset' the Fruitbasket" and
"One, Two, Three. • •
Jackie Rathwell was Fairy Queen
and she placed the Toadstool for
Brownie Ring. Brovviiie Gold was
c011ected in 'a treasure chest-with
wings as this 'money will leave the
Pack and go to the World of
Friendship Fund that helps guiding
around the world. Tawny' Owl
presented 'Vicky Hackett with her
Golden • Bar followed by the.
Swedish Prayer.
At Pow -Wow the Brownies' were
'told that the tobogannin,g party
would be held on Tuesday, March
2nd weather permitting. The
Thinking Day church service will be
.held 'on Sunday, February 22nd at
Lucknow Presbyterian Church and
all' Brownies were asked to try: and
attend. Packie then read a short ,
story about our founder Lord and.
Lady Baden Powell. A short
dikussion was held on why we
have Thinking Day. The. main
reason is to remember our, found-
ers' birthday February 22nd. , '
Each Six had a turn to tell about
the country they 'had chosen to'
think about for this meeting. The
Pixies told about 'Columbia with
Rosalea Cameron_ showing a doll
dressed in' a Brownie uniform of
that country and telling about the
games they play at their meetings.
Rosemary Gilmore read a letter
front a foster child in Columbia and
Lisa Nagel showed the Pack a few
words from the language of
Columbia. Mae Raynard told about
coffee growing and bow it is
harvested as this is' Columbia's
main crop. . -
The. Gnomes chose Mexico with
Sharon Struthers telling about, the
test work of the -Maican Brownies
and the games they play. She also
showed money from Mexico.
Donaida Thompson showed two
dolls dressed like Mexican women.
Vicky Hackett told abOut the people ,
that live in /Mexico.
The Elves told • about the
Philippines and Tracey McDonagh
showed a poster she had made
about the Brownies. She also .told
about their homes and the lang-
uage they speak. Heather -Wan .-
tyre told about the games the
Brownies play in' the Philippines.
The Sprites chose' Denmark with
Helen MacIntyre showing a poster
she had made about the Brownies,
Jackie Rathwell showed the flag of
*Denmark. Dianne Wilson told' the
Pack that a famous writer , from
Denmark was Hans • Christian .
Andersen. Dianne then passed
oPen-faced sandwiches around as
this is a Danish specialty.
Everyone • enjoyed a piece of
birthday cake followed by a
Thinking Day Prayer and 'Brownie
Taps.

THINKING DAY MEETING.
For their , special Thinking Day
meeting the Lucknow Girl Guides
went howling. Each girl asked a
friend to join iii the bowling and
then to' attend the meeting at the
Lucknow Town Hail.
The girls .played a couple of
games and then a candlelighting
ceremony was• conducted by Cap-
tain Mrs. Doi l Thompson.,
