THE E.J. CORNIES REPORT
ON THE RESTRUCTURING OF
Telephone
Talk
BY BOB DILWORTH
installation and Repair Manager
A coin telephone replacement -and conversion
program involving the installation of new
single-slot coin telephone sets, a 20 cent charge
for local calls from some pay phones, and the
provision of emergency calling without coins
from all outdoor - located booths will take place
in this area .from February 25 to March 5th.
The; 20 cent rate, the first increase since 1952,
is already effective in most Ontario communit-
ies and was authorized by. the Canadian Trans-
port Commission on August 15, 1974.
The increase does nit, however, apply to pub-
lic telephones located in raiiway stations, bus
terminals, hospitals, nursing • hemes, rooming
houses, churches and those on sidewalks ad-
jacent to a .public thoroughfare. At all these
locatons, the 10 cent rate will remain.
The new single-slot coin phones developed by
Bell-NortherwResearch and manufactured by
Northern Electric, are •from a user's point of
view, larger and have only single cein slots for
five, ten and 25 cent pieces instead /of three on
the old • - 'style phone,
Following the trend to electroni6 switching,
the familiar coin sounds now heard when ,money
is deposited have been replaced by electroni-
cally - produced tones which are inaudible to
the user's ear.
Because of the two which will apply,
instructional cards at each ptiblic telephone
will dearly indicate whether the cost of a local
call is 10 or. 20 cents and if ,an emergency call
to "0" Operator can be made without coins.
