CM) News This is only the second year that the safety awareness contest has operated as an activity. Prior to last year it had operated on, its own, without club status. The safety awareness contest is run, similar to the reach for the top, contest but all of the questions involve various aspects of safety. For the past 'two years F. E. Madill was runner-up in the regional contest. This year the team composed of Andy Heim, Robert Strauss, Glenn. McLean and Bordon Wray won this contest and travelled to Ingersoll .fof the inter-regional contest. Here com- petition was much keener with many of the competitors so knowledgeable of safety practices that interrupting the question was common. F. E. Madill played its best game • of the year against a much superior team for Tillsonburg but lost by three questions to become runner-up. Congratula- tions to the team. - Once again this year the creative' writing club is sponsoring a contest. This contest is to decide who can write the best short story, poem or essay.. Gym 228 last Thursday; two teams gathered for combat. The students' Reach 'For The Top team -- Marilyn Qngram, Gordon Wray, Stan Loree and Don Sanderson • . faced Mrs. Tiffin,l1r. Gavreluk; Mr. Hunter and Mr. Mali.' . Competition was fierce and the score bounced back and forth, first favouring the teachers, then the students.. When the final score was tallied, the teachers had 175 points. The students won by 15 points with a final score of 190 points. COngratalations are due to both the students and teachers who took part. Many enthusiastic kids and cheer leaderk x trudged down , town through the snow to watch this `grudge match'. Mr. Cardy of the Geography Department was goal tender for the teachers and Gator (Brian Wall) was goalie for the ' students. It was a fast game with -- almokt no .contact which display- ed the skill of Our 'Mustang team. The game was refereed by- -Henry Olechowski and Gary Nicholson. A thunderous roar of clapping and cheers went up when John Hendefson /scored 'the first goal assisted by Jim Ritter. Keith „Nethery, who was the sports announcer, kept everyone informed about the plays during the entire game. 'Although . , the teacher delegation put forth their greatest effort it '.was useless against the overTowering student team. Jim Ritter, who was chosen star of the game, dropped .iti a second goal making it 2-0 which' was the final score. ThankS to coach Lougheed and manager Willitsfor a job well done. After the, brootnball game , there was a free ice-skating' for »anyone who wished to go. BASKETBALL MIDGET BOYS On, January 27 the boys played Seaforth with the 'score in Sea- forth's favour being 40-29. Madill was badly outplayed in the first half but came on strong in the second half. The lead Seaforth had, prayed to be too much 'to over come. Top scorers were Brent Johnston and Steven Burke. SENIOR BOYS The senior , boys also played Seaforth on Tuesday and came up with' a winning score. They overpowered Seaforth 44-37 de- spite a late charge by Seaforth. Strong rebounding by John Under- 'wood and the fast break scoring of Ralph and Rodger Morrison sealed the victory. .High scorers were Rodger Morrison with 16 and John Underwood with 10. VOLLEYBALL JUNIOR GIRLS On 'Tuesday, at Clinton, the juniors defeated their first oppon-, ents, Exeter, in tkvo straight games „157 13, 17-15. As indicated by the scores, the gatnes were close and exciting. The next game, matched Madill against the, defending HurOn-Perth champions. Madill took the first gathe 15-12 0 but in both the second and third the Juniors gaile .up too much of a lead at the beginning of the game. Losing with an 8 and 9, point deficit. /' Enjoying ''sunshine and warm weather in Florida are Mrs., Rhoda MacKenzie and her sister Miss, Edna Cook of Owen Sound and Mr. and Mrs. K, L. MacKenzie. .Mr.. and Mrs. Duncan Thorburn have recently returned home from a month in Florida. Mr. Gordon Finlayson is 'report- ed making progress in University Hospital, London, where he has been 'a patient since before Christmas. Mrs. Emile MacLennan, who has been hospitalized since mid Dec- ember in Owen Sound hospital, was moved to Kincardine Hospital on. Saturday.
