TODAY'S HEALTH
Stand tall, sit straight-
don't let tummy go to pot
*
by David Woods
You don't. have to be a model,
a sentry or an aCcOrnplished horse-
back rider to appreciate the im-
portance of good ,posture. Ever
since human beings learned to
stand on two legs instead .of four,
the way we stood (Or walked or sat
or lay down) has had a great bear-
ing on our general well-being. •
Most goad and bad habits of
posture are formed .in childhood,
and are difficult to change in later,
years when the spine• becomes less
flexible.;
So parents can do, their children
a lasting, favor by encouraging them
to walk tall (no matter what height.
the children may be), and to stand'
or Sit pr6perly. Working hUnched
over a desk, -or slumping in 'a 'sofa
watching TV should be actiVely.
discouraged. • . ,
'When the children spend' time
in front of the television set they
should do so either sitting up
straight in a chair with their feet
fiat on the floor; or, if their feet
don't yet reach the floor, sitting
on it Indian-style with their legs
crossed in front of them. •
Even though preyenticin is far.
easier than cure where posture
°concerned, there are steps adults
can take to ensure that the spine
gets as much help and sUpport as
possible.
To .start with,. avoid sitting on
chairs with sagging back support,
Or'sleepin on mattresses soft , as
marshmal lows.
Walking With the head held high,
stretching the, spine by arms-up
reaching exercises,' .and swimming,
are all helpful: But the greatest
kindness you can do for your spine
— and, as a' result, for posture —
is to keep trim. The *pot belly, with
its lack. of:• muscle., tone, hangs out
sand pulls the spine, forWard in an
accentuated arch causing' not only
unattractive posture but also such
problems as low-back pain. .;
People whose movements are
restricted at work are' especially
susceptible to postural problems:
secretaries using chairs with inade-
quate back support, assembly line
workers bus or truck drivers, store
clerks.
Changing jobs may have to be
the' answer if the work beComes too
painful, but those who are on their
feet' all day Should get Off them
now and again; sedentary morkers
should try to move about Occasion-
ally. And drivers shbuld try to get
the best possible Seating, to vary
their driving' position as much as
they can, and to stop from time to
time to ex'ercise the neck and limbs.
Orthopedic specialists also advise
that sleeping on back or 'sides is
better for posture' than sleeping
face-down,
For those who haven't acquired
jor been forced to acquire) good
posture early in life, a trim figure,
sensible.exercise,. change of stance,
and proper support when sittineor
lYing down are all helpful, Worth
putting your, back.into.,
