• The follpWing 'part of the
presentatiOn on energy given ,at Ole
Natidnal Farmers Union Conven-
tion on Deconiber 10 in Edmonton,
by Joe. Roberts of • University of
Saskatoon:
*Oil is the rargest cchrunodity in
international trade.,
Oil supplies 75% of the world's
technological energy requirements.
The U,S. is the dominant
national force . in that trade. 'A
`handful 'of U.S. firms dominate
U.S. government oil policy and
therefore world commerce in oil.
Oil accounts for 30% of all U.S.
overseas investment and for. 40%
of U.S. 'investment in underdevel-
oped countries. Oil provides 60%
of U.S.. earnings from these
regions.
The U.S. alone consumes 36% of
the world's energy to meet the
needs of its population which is
only 6% of the world total. Canada
is an energy consumer on approxi-
mately the same per capita scale.
We use energy equivalent to 55
bbls. of oil per person per year.
The overwhelming supply of oil
in inter-natiOnal trade originates in
countries in the underdeveloped.
world, In Canada, the recent
practice of supplying a' false
surplus of 850,.000'bbls„of oil per
year .t8 the U.S., while importing
an equal -amount from Venezuela,
is being.: slowly abandoned.
The real energy cartel is
composed of , private companies
who own the oil in the ground, the
drilling Operations. the-Pipelines
tanker ships and trucks to transport
it, the refineries as well as service
stations and advertising operations
to , sell the end, product,
Most recently the whole OPEC
led by,. Venezuela took coordinated
state action to claim controlling
interest in their own oil, relegating _-
the' giant firms to secondary
administrative roles.' This is a true
loss to those , companies, a genuine
gain to,the states,, and a threat to us
because the corporate cartel was
able to transfer the cost of their
losses directly tOWestern consumer
nations including Canada, while
blaming 'OPEC. This our own
•fault for permitting the monopolies
to run our energy economy:

By Paddy Annten.Pas
A quiet, but 'contented month
sheaaospna, .ssed PineCreat Manor
after a busy. social Christmas
'The Ladies of the Christian
Reformed Church were in for their
Monthly bingo game which is
always enjoyed by the residents.
Our local Kinette Club was also
over for a time of visiting, and
playing games. Pinecrest Manor is
privileged to be ,""the project" of
our loeal club.
We have been happy to have the
Lucknow Presbyterian Evening
Auxiliary bringing us an entertain-
ing evening.
• At our January Birthday Party,
at which we honoured Mrs.
Elizabeth Anderson, Miss Bertha
Allin and Mrs. Mary Quinn, we
were pleaSed to have with' us 'the
South KiniossPresbyterian Ladies
bringing us a most : entertaining
afternoon. A beautifully decorated
cake, • prepared by our staff,
completed the enjoyable afternoon.
Our volunteers 'from the Olivet
group, _Ripley, have been in many
times this Month with their cheery ,
visiting.
We are looking forward to a New
Year that will be filled with. faniily

difference. .After portraying the
'popular entertainer of the 30's and

at the Lyceum in Whigharn.
At long last, a Canadian movie
has found favour with both critics
and audiences as well. It is "The
Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz",
and it opens February 8 at the.
Lyceum. Based on Mordecai
Riehler's 1959 novel, and using
:Richler's own screenplay,' it is the .
story of Duddy, an aggressive,
18-year-old who comes of .age in
Montreal's Jewish sector at the end
of the 1940's, Graduating from
high schobl, Duddy is unwilling to
drive a cab' like his father, slave
away at medkal school like -his
brother, or opt fOr a cushy job at his
uncle's garment factory. Duddy
'quickly learns that a, combination of
hard work, "chutzpah" and larc-
eny will get "him a lot further than
the conventional grind, The bitter
fact that friendships, compassion
and love -might have to be
sacrificed to 'get there, doesn't hit
him until' it's too late.
Richard, DreyfUss gives a beauti-.
ful perfOrmanceTas,Duddy ,Kravitz.
