.'Preservation or • Starvation!'
is the caption on a brief recently
presented . to the Ontario Govern-
ment on Land Use by the Ontario
Institute of Agrologists.
The brief said that the Agrolog-
ists believe it is essential that the
governments of Ontario and Can-
ada develop and adopt immediate
policies which: (1) Provide for a
level of food:Production designed to ,
make Canadians. self-sufficient in
food commodities normally produc-
ed in temperate regions and -(2)
which would enable,. Canada to
assist in providing the food
required. bY the growing population
of a hungry world.
The brief also says there will be .
short-run costs involved in preserv-
ing food land for food produttion,
and feels strongly that society' must
be prepared to meet these costs in
order to ensure, future ' fOOd
supplies. Th'e brief related that
"The world land tnass is a fixed
quantity of which about 7 percent
will, support agriculture. The
western world, has under its contra!
about 45 percent of the present
arable land with much less than 20
'percent of the world population.-
Looking 'at the world agricultural
lands in another way, there are.,
presently 1.2. cultivated • acres for
each person in the world.
However, by the year 2000 when
the world population is projected to
be approximately. seven, billion-
people, there will be :5 eulthiated
acres per person.

Cold germs are on the midwinter
offensive, and the search is on for
fast, 'fast relief from runny noses
and hacking coughs. •
There's no real 'way to cure - or
prevent r colds. Treatment is
mainly relief .of symptom: Canad-
ians spend many millions of4lollars
every year 'on non-prescription
products ,to relieve cold systems.
Advertisers spend additional
lions of dollars to' promote their
own brands. of relief.
, A recent consumer study shows,
most over-the-counter cold remed-
ies are remarkably Similar. Almost
all, contain at least two or three
basic ingredients: a pain reliever, a
decongestant, and an antihista-
mine, according to your local Lung
Aisociation. .
In some cases,, according to
ConsUmer Reports, the pain reliev-
er is aspirin. And though a
decongestant in relatively high
doses can help relieve cold
symptoms for a few hours, the
'Osage found in time-released
capsules usually supplies too little
medication at any one time to' be
much help. An antihistamine; on
the other' hand, can actually
intensify a cough by thickening
secretions, in the bronchial 'tubes,

the lungs.
Night-time liquids may help'
some - but not by relieving
symptoms. The alcohol content of
some of these medieations is 50

germs get a stronghold in the body.

dulled. The, condition hangs on
