The World Religion Day obser-
Vallee, held on the third Sunday in
January each 'year, is used by the
Baha'is to illustrate the common
foundation of all the world's major
religions. - According to Baha'i
belief, all religions are in reality
one because their teachings origin.
ated with the same God. Unity,
then, is, their basic theme despite
the rampant disunity witnessed
among and within the various •
religions of the past and present --
a disunity caused, by mankind's ,
limited understanding of the Divine
Teachings of each religion, and
resulting in the_transformation of
God's totality into thousands of
man-made factions.
.The Baha'i Faith itself is an
independent world religion with
members in more than .300
countries and territoties around the
globe. It' was founded ,in the
mid-nineteenth century by Baha-
u'llah, a Persian who claimed to be
the ExPounder of God's truth for
this age. Some of the principles
laid down by Baha.'u'llah and
striven for by Baha'is include the
unity of religion, • the unity of,
mankind, ' the elimination of all
forms of prejudice, the equality of
men and women, a spiritual
solution to economic problems,
'universal education, and world
peace thtough a world 'government.
