The bowling alley business is really booming
throughout the district. New lanes have been opened
up in Zurich, 1.4.1ean, and Mitchell and from what we
an gather, they are booked to the limit with eager
participants of the game.
To Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Laidlaw of Zurich, we'd
like to express our sincere congratulations on the
opening of their fine four-lane establishment. Al-
though we only saw the alleys for a minute or two,
we certainly liked what we saw. The new building is
certainly as asset to the town of Zurich and a feather
io the hat of the Laidlaws.' We trust that the kind
people of Zurich will give it their wholehearted sup-
port.
A tip of the chapeau also goes out to Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Arnold of Lucan for their $90,000 estab-
lishment in the Irish centre. The Arnolds have the
most modern alleys we've ever seen. The full six
lanes are completely equipped automatically right
from the pin-setter to the subway ball return. It cer-
tainly didn't take Jack long to rebuild after fire
wiped out his initial start in the bowling business a
year ago, Once again, congratulations to the Arnolds
and Laidlaws!
THESE DIDN'T GET AWAY — Henry Greene, -Exeter,
proudly displays a 'good-looking catch of pike that didn't
get away on Friday afternoon. Largest of the pike caught
weighed seven pounds and measured 31 inches. Another
was 29 inches in length. Mr. Greene made his six-pike
catch in the Ausable Creek west of Exeter,

CANADA'S BEST "ROCKET"
Many lengthy messages have been written
about Montreal Canadiens' fabulous Maurice "Rocket"
Richard during his 18-year span in the Natibnal
Hockey League. Practically every year that Richard
played, he rewrote the record books in some way,
shape or form.
Whether you like the guy or not, you've got
to admire him for his playing ability and actions.
We can't recall any hockey player who has been in
!So much hot water season after season and still
comes out smiling when it's all over, There isn't any
doubt about it that it will be a long, long time be-
fore another player as colourful as the "Rocket"
arrives to lure fans into the rinks across the country
like Richard has. From a rapid Montreal standpoint,
rooters are sorry to see him go. From the. Canadiens'
front office standpoint, they're happy he's gone. Now
don't get us wrong, the Canadiens' brass didn't want
him to quit particularly, but now that he has, it paves
the way for a younger up-and-coming star to make
his move. And why shouldn't the "Rocket" retire?
With the $25,000 a year deal he has sewed up as
"goodwill ambassador", he can't go wrong.
Personally, we are sorry to see the "Rocket"
reach the -retirement age. We. feel he was the greatest
clutch player in the -business. if you needed a goal,
the "Rocket" was your man!
There has been plenty of controversy between
the public as to who is the world's greatest hockey
player, Richard or Gordie Howe. We have to side in
with. the Howe fans now, Gordie is the best! Why,
did you say? Well, it's because Richard has retired!
The 39-year-old Richard has set a record that
speaks for itself. For the benefit of interested read-
ers, here is how -the 18 years of his tremendous
career were spent, point-wise:

CUFF' CLEANERS — Attention all minor baseball
players in Exeter. Anyone who has not turned in his
uniform is asked to do so immediately at the Exeter

is going to take place in the Exeter Men's Softball
League. Exeter Kinsmen, who finished last in the
regular schedule, are leading the group finals 1-0
and need just one more victory to take it all. There
has been some pretty fancy plays and hitting by the
Ximmen crew lately and nothing seems to be able
to stop -them, However, Gifford's club could come
through yet! Right, Blake? . — Bowling is back in
full swing at the Exeter lanes with the ladies' and
