A CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE MAKING? One question that has always confronted sports-minded citizens in both towns and cities is 'Why don't our teams win championships?" To many, if a team doesn't win some kind of a title before the Season runs out, having the club was a waste of time. Surprisingly enough, we've run into several coaches who feel this way. The coaches' attitude is that they have failed in their efforts if a title eludes them. To this corner, reasoning such as this is away off base. We feel that the main thing in any line of sport is to get as many kids participating as pos- sible. If a coach finds himself in the fortunate posi- tion of having some exceptional talent and carries on to win a title, well that's just another feather in his hat. Mass participation is stressed in cities and coaches are out cutting each other's throat trying to get a winner. This may be okay for a star ball or hockey player who is rushed after all the time, but what about the mediocre lad who wants to play just as bad but isn't quite as good? He's shoved into the background. Although few people realize it, the real chance for kids playing any kind of sport lies in your small towns where the material isn't as great and every man is needed to field a team. There isn't select players to choose from. Anyone handling a team does so mainly to keep the kids happy and out of trouble with the hope that sometime he can field a winner. Ernie Chipchase and Ed Corbett who handle the Hensall midgets are no exception to our line of thought. This pair has handled Hensel], teams ever since we moved into these parts. How many cham- pionships have they won? Not too many! But they ' keep coming back year after year because the kids are eager to play and have the hope that some day an Ontario title will land right in their lap. Well, this may be one of those di precious years Ernie and Ed have worked for. ''' Hensall midgets could be crowned Ontario "D" champions within the next two weeks! After leading the local league all summer, Hen- sall kayoed Merlin Kins- men in two straight games. Despite a lengthy layoff, the club played fine ball. Steve Kyle and Bill Shaddick look ed after the pitching duties for a two-game series sweep. Bruce Horton, Dennis Mock, Larry Jones and Robert Mickle formed the infield, Jack Chipchase, Harry Moir and Gerry Chapman pat- rolled the outfield. These boys have come up through the various classifications together and have come close on different occasions to winning it all. This could be the year, as they meet Langton in the Ontario finals. We feel the Hensall lads are eager and if they play the brand of ball they are capable of, they should make the grade. However, as in past years, we're sure all of the Hensall lads realize that Lang- ton will give it their best shot too!
