Pinery park reports
'wonderful season
Exeter Public School
In summing up the 1960 sum-
mer season at the Pinery P'ark,
Gar Myer s, superintendent,
stated it was an "exceedingly
wonderful year."
"It was way above any of our
expectations" he said "and we
nearly doubled our figures from
last year. "We have already sold
8,047 permits to campers, and
we are expecting a large num-
ber in over the Labor Day week-
end."
During the 1959. season, the
park issued 4,800 permits to
campers.
Over the Civic Holiday week-
end there were 1100 campsites
set up in the park There are
only 500 permanent facilities for
campers in the park.
Mr. Myers said that the park
crew had sold. 16,904 permits at
the gate this year. However, he
said that was not an accurate
picture of the number who visit
the park, as several people using
the Pinery facilities had pur-
chased, permits in other Provin-
cial parks.
Winter work program
Although no definite program I
has been annoupced for the;
park, Mr. Myers said that sev-
eral of the staff would be as-
signed various jobs during the
fall and. winter months. The staff
will be busy making repairs,
painting, planting trees and
cleaning up the park after the
busy summer season. For the
past two years, the park has
been used for UNR relief work,
but Mr. Myers said he didn't
know whether it would be in-
cluded in this year's program.
At present, the Superintendent

is the only permanent member
of the Pinery staff, and all other
workers are "casuals." The
number of staff that Is kept on
for the winter is determined by
the amount of work that the De-
partment of Lands and Forests
has slated for the Pinery.
Campers year round
Although the heavy portion of
camping will come to a" close
this weekend, the Pinery remains
open all year for any who wish
to visit. During the past two
years the Pinery has played host
to many campers during the
weekends in September and
early October. Several Boy
Scout troops move into the
park for winter training ses-
sions.
Mr. Myers said that during the
fall and winter months the Pin-
ery was a favorite spot for bird-
watchers. "Most of these people
come from the London and Sar-
nia area" he stated "and you
would be surprised at the num-
ber of people you see parked on
the side of the roads watching
the birds through field-glasses.
Praises crew
During the past season, Mr.
Myers said that. lie had. several
occasions to praise his excellent
staff. They are a fine bunch of
men." he stated "and they have
done a terrific job — especially
on our busy weekends, when
some of them had to work dote
ble shifts."
The majority of the 30-man'
staff is made lip of area men.
Several students are hired for

fellows are in ;tint or second

rio.
