FAIN IN CHILDREN
CAN RE SERIOUS
"One of the most common com-
plaints that one hears in the paedi-
atrician's office is that of fatigue
in the child patient. . Such fatigue
may be either acute and transient
corning on after a few late nights
or unusual physical activity, or it
may be a chronic persistent type",
writes Dr. I•larold. E, Edwards in
an article prepared especially for
the current issue of Health Maga-
zinc, official publication of the
Health League of Canada. •
The second, or chronic type :of
fatigue in children is the type
which interferes with a child's
well -hying, his progress at school,
his relations with his fellows, his
general growth and development.
Children do not often complain.
of fatigue in the younger age
group, but the older ones may
The child will come in and' lie
down at unusual times. He will
be natc e • rather w h x at i than a partici-
pant at play with his fellows, as
though he did not have the physi-
cal strength to keep up with his
playmates.,
With this .may be emotional dis-
turbances. He cries easily.) ,His
disposition changes to that of an
irritable, uneooporative boy, There
is a decease in his mental achieve-
ments, He starts to get behind at
school. The teacher will notice
early that he lacks energy, seems
physically tired and may appear
bored with his surroundings, He
appears to have a short .attention
span, He becomes restless and
cannot remain quiet for more
than short periods. He develops
dark circles about the. eyes, and
his posture becomes drooped.
As his fatigue progresses, he be-
comes a "lone wolf". Headaches
restless sleep and insomnia, occur
It becomes bard for him to get to
sleep after he goes to bed,
The causes of chronic fatigue
are many, but they may tie re-
solved roughly into two groups
which are very prone to overlap
They are physical and emotional.
Under the physical causes are
listed' such conrlitions as chronic
disease, dietary causes, faulty rest
habits and so on, The emotional
causes are broader, and include
home factors, and ,,environment at
school.
The article points out that
chronic fatigue cannot be correct-
ed so long' as physical defects
exist, If no physical defect can be
discovered to account for his con-
dition, a thorough study should :be
made into the psychological fac-
tors in his environment, Stresses
in the home should 'be relieved, and
the t'o-operation and understanding
Of his teachers solicited. His
extracurricular activities and re-
lation to his playmates should be
assessed, Faulty `food and rest
habits should be corrected.
