resources of Ontario's 650,000
people aged 60 and over 'was be-
gun last Wednesday by a commit-
tee of the Ontario Welfare Council
in a meeting held in Toronto.
Barry Wenger, publisher of Thr
Advance-Times, is one of the 30-
member committee which includes
representatives from several of the
larger industrial concerns in the
province, as well as those from
labor organizations, welfare groups,
religious bodies and Ontario's De:
partment of Welfare, The local
member of the committee wit,
named to represent the non-city
areas in the discussions.
Gower iVfarkle, "chairman of.„ the
committee, predicted it would take
a year to study the subject and
prepare a final statement. An in-
terim report, however, will be pre-
sented at the council's annual
meeting and conference early next
summer.
In the . course of its work, the
committee will examine the various
sources of income for Ontario's
older citizens, including individual
and company pension plans, real
estate, cash savings and earnings,
as well as the government pro-
grams in effect. The social security
plans of other': countries, such as
the United Kingdom and the USA,
will also be Studied.
Advance' material prepared for
the committee by Donald Bellamy,
assistant executive director of the
Ontario Welfare Council; indicates
that in Ontario there are '125,000
people 'aged` 60 and over who re-
ceive government assistance on a
Means test basis and another 150,-
000 who "rely heavily on govern-
ment programs such as Old Age
Security and war pensions."
From their consideration of
aVallable material . on the subject,
the committee `expects to produce
by the fall of 1958 a statement on
public welfare policy in answer to
the question!' Are we providing
adequately for our old age?
Mr. Markle, the chairman, is
Canadian director of education and
welfare, United. Steelworkers of
America, President of the Ontario,
Welfare Council, Ralph C. C. Hen-
son, a Toronto investment counsel-
lor, is an -ex officio member; secre-
tary of the committee is Donald
Bellamy.
All members of - the committee
were chosen, Mr. Bellamy explain-
ed, for their knowledge of and in-
terest in the subject, and for their
ability to represent broader groups
in -their professions or communi-
ties.
