All the .newest techniques; ma- tcrials, color anddesign are com- bined in the Wingham pUblie school's $30,000 four -room addition, aiid it is to be on display to the people of, Wingham: `tuts Friday eitening, Winghanr's school construction program, like Ontario's, is design., ed to keep pace with the treinett. dons post-war increase in .school• population. The expansion of edu-' cational facilities at the Wingham' school since 1950 has .cost nearly $290,000. The- school's lastest addi- tion will provide accommodation for an extra '140 pupils: Designed by Hamilton architects, Kyles & Kyles, with Wilfred G. White as the contractor, the new addition has been under construe= tion since last October. Pleasing Colors ' ' A special .feature' of • the extra classrooms is the "color harmony" of the interior decoration. A sola tific study of color and the effects it • creates was instituted in Norway and Sweden and in the United States shortly after the last war and the Outcome, of this research is embodied in most of today's classrooms, • in Wingham's new wing the pre - dominent color is lime green with overtones of brown and ' beige. These colors singly, and in com- bination, the .experts say, are the torics most conducive to the pro- cess' of learning. •'This particular interibr• • decoration, scheme is ,known as the "dynamic color system" and is now used through- out' the new school section. This seemsa far cry from color dynamids to the "little red school- house" of yesteryear, yet it is less than 100 years since Winghalii's Usk public school was built. First School. The original school building was a• small frame one, built on the, corner of John and Ledpold.streets, but itsoon became inadequate and another school had to be ofand Fran- John construct- ed on - the corner ces streets, • This' building accom- =dated the pupils until about 1949, when overcrowding once more forged changes in the primary school arrange nehts in town, Vive years ago an addition coin - prising three classrooms, a kinder. garten and washrooms was added,, The addition was designed tp en- able extra rooms to be erected to the north and, west sides, The .old. sohooi and the n"ew structure proved adequate until 1955, when a boost in enrolment figures again made school board officials decide on further expan- Sion. . St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Afterthe ceremonial proceedings the public of Wingham will be in- vited to visit and 'inspect the school, The four nein' classrooms have. been in use since September 3rd, when the fall term began. Teachers. occupying` this part o€ the school are Miss Mary McMillan, Mrs. Vel; ma Shera, Miss Margaret Jamieson and , T. S. Beattie, „the school prin- cipal. The addition is a ' one -storey brick structure extending west along John Street, It contains,' be- sides the four classrooms a tea- cher's room, principal's office and caretaker's: store -room. It is de- signed so that a classroom and washrooms can be added •td the north side of,the cotridor. The lighting fixtures through- put are ofthe fluorescent •shadow - less type, ceilings are accoustic tiled and the desks and other fur- nishings are of the most modern design. One 'wall of each room is given over entirely to window area, with the opposite wall carrying an "end-to-end" blackboard, Each classroom has, its own steel sink, and the pupils' clothes are hung up in a specially designed wardrobe With a folding door.
