W/NCAIA Aerial Demonstration Featured at National Forest Fire Met CHARI..Q, 4,B.—A new aerial forest fire bombing technique, using a sodium calcium borate and water mixture, was denlon- grated here for the first time, in Canada as part of a two-day forest fire •research, eonference sponsored by the ) Woodlands Section of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. The szec- taenlar display was viewed -by some 125 .fire control experts from Canada and the United States, Two Stearman bI.planes "bombed" the flames with 100 gallon loads of the borate -water mixture, as they streaked about fifty feet over a •specially , built brush fire. Dropped as a blan- ket rather than a spray, the mix- ture coated the brushtto retard burning. Thus, its principal use Would be to control small fires and keep them from spreading. Great hopes are placed on the :mixture as a fire retardant, ra- ther than as a fire extingui.sher. When dropped around, or in ad - Vance of a fire, 'it will effectively insulate the brush and trees against the flamesthereby "hold - Ing" the blaze until ground crews can put the fire under control., Despite the chemical's prom- ise, ground fire fighting with hand tools, bulldozers, and port- • able pumping equipment will still be necessary in combatthial forest fires, it was revealed. In addition to the borate de- monstration, other forms Of „ water -bombing • from the sky were shown the delegates. The programme also featured exten- sive discussions on all aspects of forest fire suppression, particu- larly the need for an expanded research program. F. A. Harri- son, general chairman of the • meeting, and. vice-president 1./c woodlands, Canadian Interna- tional Paper Company, called on the delegates to suggest new avenues of research into fire suppression that Canadian agen- • cies could follow. Conunenting on the conference, B. F. Avery, chairman of CPPA.'s executive board, and hiraself,.a planate -forester who has spent forty ,years in forestry leork, stated: "We must do everything our psijo to put a stop tothe wasteful, destruction by. fire m,of Canada's forests." • , • .1.Every year, mostly through d Testedfin Canada .11'10011'TYHPINfi' , . , U. .00 WO ..pent by the Win$- 119114eralfi77.thneCnb filrfelY4eye.eittCm411:gidbi7r x.egion: nileiviiil, the, , saving of only will agree it., has been money well itiOntoo said Comrade De Witt Miller ' Okr111.4 a .discussion of A $200 aOcoont, which the branch had. received from $44tiinci.
