With ways that were dark and deep; At his desk in that old red school- house He would often fall asleep, Free as the Winds of summer, Wild as the waves at play, We could roll and tumble and wrestle' And still he would snore away. But my soul' of such sports grew weary, And it looked just as safe as pie— SO I 'chewed up a wad of paper And peppered him in the eye. (Tearful pause), Swiftly his strong arms folded. My neck in a fierce embrace, As the light 'of a longed-for triumph Silently covered his face. And as, in the storm-swept forest Is smitten the stalwart tree, I fell in .my saint-like beauty Across that old teacher's knee, Therefore among the pictures That hang on memory's wall, The one of that old red school- house seemeth the worst of all, (Note—It seems that many rural schools were painted'red in the old days. The reason probably was red paint was supposed to be the most durable and show the least inroads of sun and dust and weather—any- way Bluevale school was painted red and the Bluevale Bard attend- ed this school). 0 - 0 - 0 BLUEVALE SCHOOL The first Bluevale school' was a frame building standing on the street leading, from the highway past the United Church manse. The part that remains of the build- ing is now used as a warehouse at the creamery. The first school was built in 1860. (The first settler came in 1856). A Mr. Wilson was the first teacher. The school was also used for church purposes. Soon 'a better building, also frame, 'was built on a lot near the cemetery. A second room was add- ed later as the population grew. Some of the early teachers were John Thynne, Thomas Farrow 'af- terwards member of parliament, Asher Farrow, his brother, and W. G. Duff. The Minutes of school meetings now in possession of trus- tee's date back to 1885. Previous minutes cannot be found. From 1885 to 1914 the following were teachers in the frame school: Edward J. Slemmon, Elizabeth Mc- Guire, J. II. Thompson, Miss Tucker, Miss Lang, Armand Hart- ley, Miss Lowery, Alex McEwen, Jean Black, Miss Smillie, Miss Bal- lentyne, Miss Jessie Fraser, Mac Aikenhead, Miss Caldwell, George Scott, Alex McEwen (second per- iod), William VanVelsor, Rate Marshall, Jeanette Brock, Florence Aithheson, Ann Geddes and Alfred, Posliff. Mr. McEwen '‘taught 17 years In all and Miss Brock 14 or 15, she 'having taught two periods also. The old school had poor facilities compared with modern, ones. For many years the sehoolyard was not enclosed and the children had the run of the back common all the way to the river, There were Sonic eighty or ninety pupils. The care- takers of the old school were Mrs, Baillie 1886-1897, Mrs. Jas, Aitche- son 189171913, and Mrs. Sinelther 1918-1914. In 1914 a new brick one room School was built On main street. The building Was planned with a basement and teacher's room. 'The grounds were Carefully Planned with the idea of making a comituni- ty .centre. Toes, shrubs and flower borders were planted, The Women's Institute and the Bluevale Literary Society bought pictures, books and other things for the school, More recently other Improve- ments have been made ' to the gieetric lights Were ht- stalled, Ititevale school has received Mitch favorable, comment Prices Slashed to Rock Bottom Odd Diningroom Table and Chairs Kitchen Table and Chairs, China Cabinets Couches, Chesterfield and two Chairs Odd Chesterfield Chairs,•and Record Stands Or Bedsteads, Cooking Stoves, Oil Stoves Sewing Machines, Buffets, Table Lamps 7 cu. ft.
