GORRIE— Mrs. Manfred Irwin
entertained the Woman's Associa-
tion of the Gorrie United Church
at her home .on Thursday evening.
Mrs, Delbert Clegg presided for
the worship period. Mrs. A. Taylor
opened the meeting with prayer
and gave the Scripture taken from
St. Luke 3:40-42.
Mrs. Clegg chose as the theme of
her talk, "Mother, the Heart of
the Home", and closed with re-
citing the poem "Somebody'e Mo-
ther".
Mrs. T. L. Inner, president, con-
ducted the business and plans were
made for the garden party , on
June 19th. The president closed
with the theme prayer and lunch
was served by• the hostess and her
committee.

Miss Marilyn Mann
GORRIE—Donna Toner, assisted
by Ruth Toner and Jeanette Pyke,
was hostess on Friday evening
for a miscellaneous shower in
honor of Marilyn Mann a bride-to-
be.
-Sandra Miller received the
guests, and each one was asked
for her signature on a towel, which
was later given the guest of hon-
or.
Games were enjoyed after which
little Allan Toner wheeled in a
gaily decorated buggy with the
bride's gifts. After opening her
parcels and being showered with
confetti Miss Mann exepressed her
appreciation and refreshments
brought a pleasant evening to a
close.

sionaty Society at a banquet in the-
Gorrie United Church hall on Mon-
day evening, when over 50 were
present, Joyce Ford was mistress
of ceremonies. Sandra Edgar pro-
posed the toast to the Queen, Faye
Edgar gave the toast to the (mo-
thers and Mrs. A. L. 'Stephens m-

ill with pneumonia at the home of
his sister, Mrs. D. C. McDonald
since coming from the West for a
visit, was taken to Wingham Has-
Pital by ambulance on Sunday.
Mrs. Harvey, Webb returned
home on Friday after undergoing
minor surgery and receiving treat-
ment at ViCtoria Hospitel, London.
Her many friends hope for a
epeedy recovery.

ST. HELENS—The May meeting
of the W.M.S. was held at the
home of Miss W, D. Rutherford .on
Wednesday with Mrs. W, I, Miller
in charge. The theme was "Trans-
Canada" with the worship service,
one of intercession for home mis-
sions, with Mrs. W. A. Miller and
Miss Rutherford assisting.
The topiP was a trans-Canada
tour taken by. Mrs. B. F. Green
who read of the Japanese at work
in the church in Canada. Mrs. C.
McDonald spoke on "Widening
Our World", Mrs. Prank McQuil-
lin 'of nursing and church work,
Mrs, E. W. Rice of Bible study
and work shops and Mrs, J. Cain.

governors of the University of Wes-

Miss Mary Thornton, of Kitchen-
er, spent the week-end at her
home.
Dr. and Mrs. Robert Beattie and
family and Mrs. Esther Beattie of
Vancouves, B.C., and Mr, and Mrs.
W. T. McInnes of Walkerton were
guests of Mr. and Mrs, T. L. Mc-
Innes on Sunday,
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dowdall, of
Toronto, visited with Mrs. C. Gil-
pin over the week-end. Mrs, Mary
Hyndman returned withk them to
Toronto on Monday.
Mrs, Pearl Heine, of Chatham
spent a few days in town at the
first of the week. ,
A number of our residents are ill
in hospital just now, Mrs. John
Gowdy and Mr. Doran Thornton
were taken to Wingharn General
Hospital last week. Mrs. George
Townsend has been seriously ill in
Listowel Hospital for some time.
We wish speedy recoveries for all.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Cook were
in London on Sunday to visit Mrs,
Cook's mother, Mrs. G. Wright,
who has been in VictOria Hospital.
Reeve Harry Gowdy and the
Good Roads committee are on a
tour of the Straits of Mackinaw
and are also inspecting the new
five-Mlle bridge which has been
erected there. •
