Does Your Child'
Write in Reverse?
By C. E. Stothers, B.A,, D.Paed.
Some children in theinfirat at-,
tempt at writing or drawing just
naturally begin at the right side,
In drawing this Aloes not matter,
but in writing it • may make a
great difference. In the writing
and reading of EngliSh words, it,
Is essential that we begin at the
left side of the word or line. The
rapid readers have ,no difficulty
in Moving their eyes from left to
right on a page. SOrne slow read-
ers show distinct tendency to
try to read from right to left.
• The first indication of this ten-
dency is often ' that the child
writes his name in reverse order
w,ith the letters ' turned towards
the' left. - This is called mirror
writing because the spelling and
letter order is correct when it is
viewed in •a mirror. The child
with this peculiarity may have
difficulty in writing, spelling and
reading,
Some 'persons seerh. to retain
vestiges of the difficulty ,through-
out their 'lives. Some of us occas-
ionally, even after years of train-
ing and practice, misplace letters
in words such as "porn" for
"apron" or , "becuase" for "be-
cause". Bank clerks have been
known to seek other employment
because pi,writing figures in mis-
placed, positions such as "$46.89"
for "$64.89", In reading words like
"house" for "horse", "saw" for
"was", "party" for "pretty",
"doll" for • "ball," "very" for
"every", a child may be showing
a carry-over of the tendency to
go from right to left instead of
from left .to •right.
In 'the child's first writing this
tendency is often first noticed.
The limitations of the type' used
in printing make it necessary to
choose letters which would show
the change due to mirror writing.
Some examples are "b written as
or "p for q", Many teachers
are thrown into a spin when they
view , such writing. They know
that it will have effects in spell-
ing and reading bat they do not
know the cause.
In one case a teacher appealed
to the inspector for help with a
child who read with difficulty.
The'inspector was nonplussed
and wrote to an ,expert for ad-
vipe. From his description it, was
deduced that the child had a ten-
dency to see things 'from right to
left, In the reply to the inspec-
tor's letter,• a copy of a sheet
from a reader was, sent in which
the typing was done in very large
print. A carbon. paper was placed
the wrong way 'on the sheet to
produce a mirror image of what
was typed on the front of ,,the
sheet. The inspector was asked to
take this sheet to the school and
to have the child try to read the
front of the sheet first. The
teacher had said that the child
could not read at all. However,
this girl stumbled through the
front of the sheet. Her .next at-
tempt was to be' the back of the
sheet where the mirror image
was shown and which allowed her
to go from right to left, You can
image the inspector's surprise
when she read• the back of the
sheet with ease. This proved that
the child could do something
which the teacher could not do.
The demonstration was helpful
because the teacher learned that
the child had a, handicap which
showed up in her reading and
that she was not incapable of
reading as had been claimed.
,Tracing Method
Before research showed the
usefulness of the Tracing Method,
it was customary in such cases to
give the child month's holiday
from wiriting. At the end of a
month it was ;calculated that he
had forgotten his habit and in-
struction was started again, under
very close supervision. The trac-
ing method is an adaptation of
the Montessori method by which
kindergartners instructed the
very young children, During
World Wax II, the tracing meth-
od was used to train illiterates 'in
the armed service's. The results
were dramatic and grown men
learned to read and write by this
1 method. Their letters home were
accomplishrrient's long denied
them due to an assumption that
they were incapable. They had
become frustrated in many cases
due to their early incapacity to
see things from left to right, The
wives and loved one were equally
appreciative and 'emotional about
their serviceman's accomPlish-
ment.•
The first step in the Tracing
Method is to, have a child or adult.
write something. Encourage-
ment is given by telling them that
they may put in a stroke for a
Word they do not know. Some-
times a • child will write four
strokes for the sentence "I like
to play". The instructor goes
around the classroom and sup-
plies the copy for the words
which the child needs. This al-
lows the pupil to copy the 'word
and correct his attempts. When
all children have one or more
words written 'in manuscript or
cursive writing, in blackboard
size, on a rough-surfaced paper,
instructor selects a child for dem-
onstration to the others, To that
child he' says, "I want you to'
trace this word (one of the words
which hassleeen written for him)
—I want you to say it aloud be-
fore you begin to trace it". (He
wants the child to hear, speak,
see and write the Word as nearly
as possible at the same time. He
wants the child to use a four-
lane highway to the central 'ner-
vous system), If the child co,

Band of Gold
TiM wedding ring has crone
down to us through the ages and
so essential was it thought to be
that many of our 'ancestors would
have considered their ,marriage'
null and void without it, There
are many cases on' record where
in the omission ,af, the coriven=
tional band of gold, the most
homely substitutes have been
used — curtain rings for example,
or a circle cut from leather. , As
• long as the symbol of unending
love and 'fidelity was .employed
they' were content.
In England the Most , popular
love ring was. ,for long thne the
. girrunal ring, „ formed of two
narrow gold bands which we're
broken apart at betrothal, each of
the contracting parties wearing
one on the .engagement finger
until the wedding clay, when
these bands Were Again united
and ,placed on the bride's finger.
There are several theories in
regard to the wearing of an, en-
gagement 'ring on the left hand,
the Most romantic, however, be-
big that 'a nerve connects • this
directly to the heart. '
