The fire' which destroyed both
the ghat Mill and ah l ' e woollen' mil
was °We of the worst trage`diea in
the early history el the commun-
ity. Ap,parently time' blivie broke
out on .the lower floor of , one of
the buildings and soon both atroc-,
tures were engulfed: Several Yoneg
Women, who were working on the
third floor of the woollen Mill were
trapped, Palmy Taylor-leaped from :
a window and her hip was so badly
broken in tile fall that she walked
with the aid of .a cane for the rest,
Of her life. A Miss Anderson clung
to a window sill while onleokers
ran for 'ladders with which to resa
cue her,' despite the fact that the
flames burned her very seriously '
about the arins, face and shoulders,
Lower l'owit was a thriving coin-
munity at. the time, • with a hotel '
operated on the north-east corner
Of the interseetiba, two or three
stores, Millinery shop. cooper shop,
two or three blacksmith shops and •
a butcher shop.
