Federation Meets
To Discuss Action
Re Producer Group
By Carl HemingWwy
The Ontario Federation of Agri -
Culture' held a .members' ,Meeting',
which Is composed of ,represents
rives from the county l?'ederationS•
Itis very encouraging to ,see these
Meetings well attended, as the .pr,-
gahisation :is .901Y as strong es
the interest showy 7.3' the mem-
bers, r
Thimain'pllrpose of the 'Meeting
Was to inform the representatives
Of the action, being 'taken on behalf
of the tobacco growers, 'The pro-.
cedure followed is the same re-
.garding all :producer group organi,
nations and it might be well to
clarify the partplayed by the
Federation.
To .form a producer group it is•
necessary that a •sizeablepetition
be signed by prodlcers and Pre -
Rented to the O,l',A The Fedeye
tion will then do all in its power
to present the facts to all produc-
ers at local meetings and :even or
gapize canvassers if neee"ssary, If'.
it then seems there is a definite'
decision to be made the C.F,A.
contacts the Dent. of Agriculture
with the request . that a vite be
taken,
It is then the responsibility of
the Department of Agrietilture to
appoint deputy returning officers
and set up polling booths in 'such
a. way as to give every producer
the opportunity to vote, It id also
the, responsibility: of the Depart-
ment to say What constitutes a
majority. In the case of the Tobac-
co Grocers there must be 51% of
all growers vote in favour' of the
plan and at least 60% of those vot-
ing must be in favour of the plan.
If We plan is 'approved the Federa-
tion. will aid .in the details; or or-
ganizing the producer group, but.
doesnot take any part in deciding
on the action that group will take.
At any future date the Federation,',
as an organization,will act only
on the request of that group:
The other main topic of discus.
sion was 'that of land easements,
and expropriations regarding
highways, pipe lines, hydro and.
telephone lines. This is not a great
problem in Huron atthe moment,.
but could be in the future. It
Might be of interest to farmers to
know that the Federation of Agri-
culture retains a lawyer,: who is
eyperienced' in these matters, and
whose advice is available. at any
time, without charge, to Federation
members. If you have a problem
along this line the Federation .can
be of assistance. . 1

The directors of Huron`
County l
Federation of Agriculture.') held
their monthly meeting in the board
rooms in Clinton 'on, March 19th;,
The minutes were read 'and adopt-
ed on motion of A. McGregor and
H. Elliott. •
The question of printing' the
Huron County Federation Survey
was discussed and it was decided
to request Clinton News -Record to
do this work for 1957 and there-
after it should be allotted for 2- 1
year terms to any of the county
weeklies interested,
The secretary was commended i
for the news items appearing in
tine county weeklies and advised
to continue with them. He- was
also instructed to advise the poul-
try committee to represent the
county at the annual meeting in
Toronto. • •
The directory voiced their ap-
proval of supplying legal advice to
members, through 'the
wherever possible. The :secretary
was instructed to obtain a number
of copies of -the Provincial Federa-
tion annual reports. •
During .the discussion period it
was felt, that the ;Federation was
going to have a very busy year:
Since the necessary legislation is
well on the way to take care of the
differences of opinion on the val-
idity of the Ont. Farm Products
Act and the Federal Bill 82 the
Poultry'Pi'oducers, Beef Producers.
and. Wheat Growers are showing
desire for action.
Earl McSpadden gave a fine re-
port on the leadership training
course at Vineland. The training of
our young people and the informa-
tion they receive at these courses
will pay good dividends to the
rural communities through the
years to come.
