A year pr so ago, 'when Faris:
dropped the waistlines of women's
dresses to give the long torso look,
dawn "went Waistlines over the
plump' tummies of little girls, This:
year the trend reversed, The 1igli
waisted "Empire" line is tops for
five -year-olds just :as it is ,for their
mothers.
Ent in children's finery, just as
in women's .fashions, there's always.
a middle course and waists show
signs of settling down. where 'nat-
ure intended them to be,. ,A pretty
fashion for little -girls this year is
tq be cummerbund, usually bright-
ly • coloured. and .fastened with -a
big flat bow at the, back.
Mr, Lurie notes that the necks
of ehiidren's fashions alter very
little from one year to another.
His firm offers same scoop: neck
lines but mothers Seem to :feel that
nothing is so flattering to a
child's round neck as a,net collar,
Sleeves, however, are .changing;'
After so many years Of, puffed
sleeves, there's an increasing de-
mand fon the smoothly set-in shirt
type of sleeve in -small-fry garm-
ents.
Once mothers discovered fabrics
could be washed and worn with.
little or no ironing, they're refus-
ing to go back to the struggle of
pressing little garments,. Mr, Lurie
maintains, Man-made: fibres with
their little new properties : paved
the way for easy care. 'The now
Canadian fibre, terylene, is a nit- •
ural for children's wear. It gives a
fabric which drapes softly in little
dresses yet stands -up remarkably
to tough -and -tumble treatment and
many fabrics of this fibre 'heed no
ironing whatsoever if drip-dried. '.
Designing for kidstoday is no
easy business. • Mothers who take
only . a casual •interest in ..their
own appearance are notoriously
fussy about the clothes they buy
for Nancy and Jimmy. Perhaps
