Ft,verybody, at one time or tither, has walked across a thick, heavy carpet and then, touched for or' _other metal object to feel and even see, a spark 'of ,clectricity. Over the years such electricity generated by the human body, us- wally through friction, and even ,static electiticity, has- been the cause of great peril and grave anx- lay to hospital and medical per- sonnel in our operating room. Practically every anaesthetic used in an operation to render the patient insensible to pain is omit* ive, and inflammable. Furthermore, being heavier than air, these gas- ses while being adminkered to a patient, aceurnulate in the lower parts of the room, • • Hospitals, have, and are contin- ually, Making improvements and innovations to eliminate the haz- ard 7 of explosion in an operating room. ExploSion-proof electric switches, shielded and -guarded lights, use of mirrors to reflect light and replace headlaraps, elimination of eauteries and the installation of conductive floors are ' now commonplace In 'most hospitals. The conduetive floor acts, in much the same way as the small chain which hangs from an oil or gasoline truck and drags onto the highway, It is made 'of a substance or material through which ' elect- ricity can pass with very little re- sistance. Its purpose is to lead or conduct human or static electric- ity out of the operating room and to be grounded harmlessly into into the earth, Now even' the pat- ient being operated upon is "grounded" so that the explosive risk is lessened still more. Today, because of man's ingenuity and. inventive ability, fires and explos- ions in the operating room of a hospital have become a rarity, in- deed, BLUEYALE Douglas Fischer had charge of the study prOgrarn at the 7g-P.1a. of the United ChurchoilSunday' eve- ning, The ouWoct was "What Part" Po the Vinting People Play in ,the ' Church?"
