HEARS OF WORK
N
AT• JAPANESE SA
Members of. St. Paul's W.A.
'Winghan•1 attended the fall Dean-
ery meeting held in Trinity Cliureh,
Bayfield, 'on Wednesday, October
24th, Miss Dorothy Parks, of
Seaforth, the Deanery president,
conducted the 'worship service.
Mrs. Gardner of Bayfield extended
a very gracious welcome to the
members and the business proceed-
ed with Mrs. Higgins, secretary-
treasurer giving her report on the
business of the previous meeting
and the financial stateineiit.
Mrs, Epps of Clinton read a
letter from Mrs. Henry Thompson,
extending thanks to the branches
of the W.A. in Huron ,Deanezty :for
acting on her suggestion that ,trees
be planted around the camp . at
Bayfield. There is need of camp
extension as last year there were
756 campers and some applications
had to be, refused owing to lack of
accommodation.
A leadership training course for
G.A. workers was outlined by Mrs.
Wilson of Goderieh, who stressed
the great influence G.A. work is
having on the life of our girls.
Mrs. Taylor, wife of the rector
of St, George's Church, Godorieh,
introduced the guest speaker, Miss
Lilies Powell, Reg. N., who before
the war was superintendent of
nurses-' at New Life San., Obuse,
Japan. The ,first difficulty was to
find a site for the San owing to
the very great prejudice about con-
tact with T.B. patients. There is in
Japan; great' indifference to human
suffering and many, times relatives
refused to allow advanced cases to
enter the San as paying patients.
In 1940 all missionaries were
sent home •and the San was turned
ever to the Japanese cchul'ch. After
the war the Canadian missionaries
went back only as guests of the
over to the Japanese church. After
help from the Anglican church, in.
Canada and U.S., the san was reno-
vated and where previously • there
was no central kitchen and rela-
tives went in and cooked food and
Washed linen for patients, all this
was changed. Modern equipment
'fwas installed and all cooking and
laundry done by a resident staff.
When she went back in 1947, they
took many supplies to etluip the
San and also a ton of food so they
would not eneroach on the very
short supply of food for the native
Japanese.
In 1900 fire destroyed the main
building arid again the Canud laac
church has been helpful in re-
building, ..„
Most of the staff at. the San are
Christians and about one-half of
the patients beoorne °Christians.
Although less than one per Cent of
the Japanese population of one
hundred million lire Christians, yet
the Japanese govethntent rceog-
niyes Christianity on the same
basis as :its native relighohs of
Buddhisin and Shietoism.
Mrs, Powell was warinly thanked
by Mts. Jewell of Brussels. The
