A PASTORAL LETTER
"My conscience became uneasy
during Lent, I" realized that I had
unusual opportunities to know the
alcohol problem at first hand and
I was doing nothing about it. I
volunteered to do some speaking
in the churches . , . I have bepn in
a dozen different denominations.
One observation, Social drinking.
is rapidly increasing b among
members in severaldenominations.
Another observation. The majority
of drinking church met/Mors are
unaware of the nature of alcohol.
One more observation. Those en-
gaged in the, manuafteure and sale
of intoxicating beverages are de-
finitely gunning for (non-drinking)
church members. . . They are'
willing to spend tent of millions
of dollars to Capture those non-
drinkers, ..The drinking church
member greatly heartens the liquor
interests. They can count on his
taking a negative or neutral at-
titude 'towards liquor legislation
in general.
The liquor interests "deplore"
drinking antotig,,YObrig people, yet
they beard their ads to make drinks
lug so attraWve that young people
will risk breaking the law to' oh-
tain this drink that makes se
many men of distil-lake,
I believe, and I know that you
believe, that every one of us
church meinbers has a witness to
make for Christ, My concern is
that our witness be from a clear
brain and d puts heart." Earl V.
