Life is n always' "a bed of roses" for fish, any more than it is for most animals, Survival of the fittest is the'rule, The life "pan of most common Ontario fish is probably not more than ten or twelve years. The life expectancy of a' newly batehed fish must be very short, and the threat of the human fisherman is,probably the least con- tributing factor in this regard, In Many eases, from thousands of newly hatched fry, only one or two will live to -reach maturity. Fish cannot live on water elope, and the competition for food is very keen from the start. Some- times the oxygen supply in a small body of water becomes too low, and fish die due, 'to this lack of oxy- gen. This aometimes occurs in a small pond or- lake during winter, when the surface is frozen over aria heavy snow prevents the water frdm picking up oxygen from the air. Usually there are other con- tributing factors causing the short- age of oxygen, such as a great deal ,of decaying vegetation in the water. Fish are very well adapted to their environment. The fins each have a special purpose in swim- ming, turning and balancing. The scales, the sharp spines of the dorsal fin,' the barbs of the bull- head, all serve as protection from predatore. Most fish are also equip ped with, protective coloration Co some 'degree, enabling them to be- come lighter or darker in color to suit their immediate environniein, We observe them make this change immediately on being moved from a holding tank with a black bot- tom to one with a lighter-colored bottom. All fish, native to Ontario, are egg layers, but each species differs in its approach to reproduction. Some go to great trouble, to build nests, and carefully guard and protect the eggs arid young fry. Others scatter their, eggs and forget them, In cases where the nest and fey are carefully guarded—for instance the Allah bass, who performs thiSc taelt for five weeks or. more—it seems to be always the male fish that has the responsibility, The bass spawns in late May, and the eggs hatch in ten days; the lake trout spawns in November and the eggs hatch the following spring.
