times the oxygen supply in a small
body of water becomes too low, and
fish die due, 'to this lack of oxy-
gen. This aometimes occurs in a
small pond or- lake during winter,
when the surface is frozen over aria

tributing factors causing the short-
age of oxygen, such as a great deal
,of decaying vegetation in the water.
Warm water will not hold as much
dissolved, oxygen as colder water,
and occasionally. a fatal shortage
will occur in very hot weather and

Fish are very well adapted to
their environment. The fins each
have a special purpose in swim-
ming, turning and balancing. The
scales, the sharp spines of the
dorsal fin,' the barbs of the bull-
head, all serve as protection from

some 'degree, enabling them to be-
come lighter or darker in color to
suit their immediate environniein,

bottom.

All fish are not alike. In the
Great Lakes region, scientists. have
a record Of 173 different species

fish, native to Ontario, are egg
layers, but each species differs in

go to great trouble, to build nests,

scatter their, eggs and forget them,
In cases where the nest and fey are
carefully guarded—for instance the
Allah bass, who performs thiSc taelt
for five weeks or. more—it seems
to be always the male fish that has
the responsibility, The bass spawns
in late May, and the eggs hatch
in ten days; the lake trout spawns
in November and the eggs hatch
