Big Parade Saturday
,Saturday's big parade, in which
dozens of floats and old-time ve-
hicles were featured,. 'faced tele-
vision cameras at 'points along the
route. .Engineers from CKNX-TV
had spent Saturday morning set-
ting up their equipment at vantage
points near the P.U,C. corner to
enable TV viewers for many miles
around to 'watch the big parade on
their screens this year' for the first
time.
A heavy rainfall immediately af-
ter the parade ended sent spec-
tators at the park scurrying for
shelter. Fortunately it was a
brief shower and the main events
of the afternoon program were
completed before another shower
put a stop to the step-dancing,
the barbershop quartet and the
horse show.
The CKNX Barn Dance' was held
in the arena in the evening and
it minded a fitting wind up for
this year's celebrations. Televis-
ion cameras were again focused
on this event which was attend-
ed by an' 'even larger crowd than
last year. •
Although there is no way of ac-
curately computing the number of
people who watched the big- par-
ade, it is generally conceded that
the crowd in town was consider-
ably larger than last year.
TURNBERRY BARN
DESTROYED IN STORM
Lightning struck the bath of
John Sproal in Turnberry Town-
ship, two miles north of Wingham,
on Wednesday night, during 'a
severe electrical storm: Loss is
believed to be more than $10,000.
The storm had earlier knocked
out hydro and telephone lines and
the first report of the fire. was
brought in by car to the Wingham
fire department. Wingham 'town
bell .had to be used to call fire-
fighters, since there was no power
to operate the siren.
Sight-seeing motorists lined the
concession road and caused a de-
lay to the fire department, which
concentrated on keeping the blaze
from spreading to Other farm
buildings. •
The fire was first noticed by a
neighbor, Harold Casemore, who
thought at first the light was com-
ing froth a barn lantern. ,
The ,barn, 66 by 60 feet, was
located on concession 11, and con-
tained the entire season's crop and
a number of farm implement%
The loss was only partly insured,
At 11,30 pen. the glow from the
flames could still be seen in Wing-
ham,
Mr.' and Mrs. Owen King reside
in the residence on the Sproal
farm.
