EARLY PEACHES ARE NOW ON MARKET Prom the time the first commer- cial peach orchard was set out on the River Road near Queenston in 1825, peaches have provided On- tario housewives with some of the finest fruit obtainable anywhere. There are many Varieties of peaches, but most, housewives seem to buy them by season, The early varieties, which arrive on the markets early in August jn Ontario, are Somervee, Marigold and Yellow Swan, These varieties' are not recommended for canning. Their main appeal is that they ar- rive early in the season, and can be used as fresh, sliced peaches, Mid-season varieties, which ar- rive on the market the last week :n Aunst, include Redhaven, Vali- ant, Vedette and Golden, Subite,e, These peaches might be telmea "dual purpose"; they are good for both canning and dessert. The late varieties, Which are ob tainable around the tniddle or SepteMbet, inelude 'Elharta, (the main one), Victory, Kalhaven and Marilyn. These too are of good all round quality, Housewives are advised to take peaches out of the basket as soon as possible, The peaches should he spread out on a newspaper so that they are not Witching each. other, and the fruit Should be ueed iii; it • TiPeria Peaches ripen best at room• temperature and should not be plaeed in the refrigerator` until, they are ripe.
