GORRIE---Coming from near and
far, young and old, native and visi-
tor gathered for three days in a
joyous celebration centred, at Gor-
rie.
There are many tired but happy
people, happy betause the general
„eelma as Z.nat everything went off
well and a good time was enjoyed
by the many who returned/to renew
old friendships and acquaintances.
The general comment from many
was that this Centennial has been
a wonderful example, of'` what can
be done by working to gether, as
the people of Howick, anti the vil-
lages in the township, have been
doing for the past year in prepar-
ation for the "biggest" event in the
aistory of the township.
The weatherman favoured with
delightful , weather until the clos-
mg ceremony at the cairn dedica-
Lien, when the service had to be
shortened on acectint of the severe
electrical and wind storm which
visited the district late Sunday
afternoon. The Sunday evening
band concert had to be cancelled.
Record crowds attended the pag-
eant "The Pages from the Ages".
It is estimated that 1200 persons
were there Friday night and many
were turned away. Saturday night
some 1000 came for the repeat per-
forniance. Of the ' pageant itself,
we cannot speak too highly. Much
praise came from the visitors and
such words as "wonderful",
"superb" and "magnificent" were
heard. ,
It is thought some 1,100 people
sat down to the supper served on
the grounds on Saturday evening.
Ladies from Molesworth served
supper on Sunday evening,
The parade, reported to be a
mile long, had 90 entries and speaks
well for the way so many entered
into the spirit of the day and for
the ingenuity and ideas brought out
in the floats, Cars of ancient vin-
tage were hunted up and attics
searched for costumer.
But best of all were the happy
reunions of school mates at the
school picnics and the Sunday
church services, when old friends
had an opportunity to get together
following the morning service 'at
each church.
