IN- POSTAL ROUTES
SVPNEY, .N„S,, (CP)--.-Lecai tra-
dition and a, hit of history went by
the board when the postal depart-
anent recently established: a. mail
route betweOn Bt. Peter:a and Irish
Cove and discarded nix local Mail
outlets.
One of the post Qffics$, at Red
Islands, has been in the Mackenzie
family for three successive genera-'
tions.
AleXander MacKenzie, better
known, in his time by Gaelic neigh-
bars as "Alliatear", was appointed
Red Islands' post Master about
1831. His house was the only mall
outlet between St. Peter's and East
Bay, a distance of 45 miles.
When Alexander died his son
Martin received the appointment
and he in turn left it to' his son,
Murdock, in 1929. • '
Tea for Canova
Rarely did anyone 'call for the
mail in those three generations
without making a short Yeellidh",
or visit, and receiving a cup of tea.
One sad Scat mused: "There
must have been a million cups of
tea served at MacKenzie'a."
At one , time "ceilidh" was an in-
stitution among the hardy Cape
Breton islanders but improvements
in communications and the in-
fluence of radio, television and
movies all but did away with it.
Only the post offices, which were
invariably in private homes, furn-
ished a ready excuse for neighbor
to meet neighbor over a cup of tea.
"Now that the post office has
gone," local historian Peter Ivlae-
ICenzie Campbell says, "one can
only reminisce."
