When the land in Huron County,
known: as the Queen's Bush 'was
eald by the grown, Hugh Howard
patchased 204 acres, being lots 16
gr.: 17, Con. 10, Howicle • Township.
His first buildings were*erected on
lot 17, close -to lets10 and /leer the
tdp of a hill. The first or; second
meeting of 575, after it Was
organized about, 3.850, was held in
his bachelor home, so he named his
farm "Orange Hill". .
'In 1867 he:Married Ellen Milne
whoWas born near. Elora, Ont., in
1841, a daiighter of John and Mary
Moir. Milne, natives of Aberdeen-
shire, Scotland and who following
their, marriage there in June 1836,
sailed at oath for America arriving
at Elora; Wellington Coanty, in
September, 1836. They also were
pioneers In Howlett having pur-
chased land from the Crown. They
built their home on lot 19, con. 12,
known as "Spriligbank Patna", now
owned by Harold Wallace.
Hugh' and Ellen Howard lived on
lot 17 until 1863 when they liold it
to Edward Ferguson, father :or
F,tobert Fog:leen, Gerrie, and now
Owned V Max Bell. They then
built a new lionise on lot 16 about
40 rods from tae corner, which is
• still jn the family. Recent owners
were the youngest daughter
(Grace) and husband, J. George

In 1870 Hugh Howard donated
a' piece of land on the corner to
the Methodists and a frame church
was built by the members of that
denomination. Previously services
of worship were held in private'
homes, many being held in the
Howard' home.

At that time four, denominations
held services, two 'of, them being
,the :New Connexion Methadiat and.
'the ',Wesleyan Methodist. . The
Orange Hill churth was closed in
1944. ',The.. building was sold and
removed in 1954. .
The first school at Orange Hill,
S.S.' No. was built of log in 1858,
.on lot 15. Later a quarter acre of
land at the rear of the church was
purchased and a frame School built,
which ,Wal used until 1893 when
'the present large red brick school
was erected. The present teacher is
Rohald Edgar, Brussels. We hope
many former teachers and pupil's
will be present at the school picnic
June 29 and attend Centennial
celebrations 'June 30 and July 1sts
Hugh and 'Mee Howard had
eleVen children. The eldest (Mary)
died- at three years of age from
shock and burns when her cloth-
ing caught fire from a lighted
candle. Two boys died in infancy,
the others Were Samuel, who mar-
ried Eliza Stewart, Magnetawah,
Ont.; Levine, (Mrs. Win; Warren);
M. Amelia, a, Reg. Arse; Ella
(Mrs. George Warren); Johns
Mina, (Mrs. Norman Brownlee);
Agnes (Mrs, Samuel Hyndman),
and Grace (Mrs, George Gelbraith)
the only one living,
Mr. Howard passed away in
February 1891 tiad Mrs. Howard
in June 1929. Both are buried in
Gonna Cernetery,

gave the ladies a splendid report
eti the annual meeting held recent-
ly in St. Paul's Cathedral at Lon-
don.
Minutes of the last meeting were
read and adopted and reports were
given- tient the W.A. and Guild
treasurers. It was decided that the
W,A. of Fordwith Would help the
Gotrie ladies with the reception
which will be held following con-
'firmation in Gorrie on Sunday,
Jane: 17, with Mrs. E. Hargrave,
Mrs. R. Foster and Mrs. S. Forest-

the detaile•
The ladies decided not to have
a• garden party this year but to
collect from each family instead.
