SCOUT
CORNER
At the last regular meeting of the
1st Wingham Boy Scout Troop
three new Scouts were introduced.
Their names are D9u,g Hamilton,
Doug Spry and John Strong.. Mr.
Overend wished the boys good luck
on their journey through scouting-
The new Shouts were then assigned
to their patrols and were introduc-
ed to their patrols and leaders.
A new patrol competition was
started and the, patrols „were all
but to get the lead. -
A signalling demonstration - was
given with a sender, receiver and
caller ,at each end of the gym. The
message was sent and received but
Mr•Overend was surprized to find
that the - received message was
quite different from the one sent
and no one could understand how
that happened.
At the :end of the meeting the
points were totalled and it was the
Swan.pritrol that was in the lead;
You can bet that there was much
rejoicing in the Swan patrol.
Stock Streams with Trout
On .Saturday Mr. Wormworth in-
vited the Scouts to help fill some
streams • with trout. About 20 boys
arrived for the job and set to work.
They put 3,300 trout into the
streams around Belgrave, but we
don't know if all the fish got to
the stream safely because some of
the boys' Pockets looked awfully
big. The fish ranged in size from
two or three inches up to twelve
and thirteen inches.
Visit from Australian Scout
On last WedneSday evening the
patrol leade'rs of the 1st Wingham
Boy Scout Troop were greatly en-
tertained by a visit of an Austra-
lian Scout, Jim Revitt, to their.
parol den., Strangely enough the
Scout comes from Wingham, Aus-
tralia, and he says its about the
same 8.12e as Wingham, Ontario.
Jim answered questions about
the kangaroo and said that he was,
very timid but could turn savage
if tornered.43e also said that there
are many kangaroos and that they
abound in all parts of Australia.
These beasts are very long jumpers
and can go 20 feet in one bound
and can reach a speed of 40 m.p.h.
Jim also talked about snakes
and sharks and he told the boys
that there are many different vat.
dales of snakes and that 90 per
cent of them are poisonous, Each
"bush walker" carries his own
snake bite kit and knows how tri'
apply first aid,
Sharks roam the coasts of Ana-
Lahti, and it doesn't even make the
papers if one is-sighted in a swim-
ming area. The lifesavers in that
country sometimes chase a shark
on surf-hoards just for sport,
Mr, Overend hopes to get sonic
maps of Wingham, Australia, and
the boys Want to begin correspond-
ing with the Scouts "down under".

The commercial students will
soon be leaving to take responsi-
bilities in new jobs in the business
world, It would be well for them
to note the comments given by Mr.
Ford, of Silverwoods Dairies,, who
spoke to the commercial teachers
in Toronto during the Easter week
at the commercial section of :-ne
Ontario Educational Association.
Mr, Ford pointed but that the
better the graduate the shorter the
training period on the job. The little'
difference in wages between steno-
graphers and secretaries is due do
the shortage of labour, but when
office helpers. become more
plentiful, the wages will vary. An
employer likes to know the grades
obtained, choice. of .subjects, and
subjects disliked. He expects his
employee to have a general . idea
of office procedure. For example,
a letter incorrectly filed may cost
a firm $63,00.
The most common complaints I,/
business men against office- work-
ers were given by Mr, Ford as,
failure to meet the dead-line; mis-
spelled words; wasted time in mak;
ing corrections; failure of employ-
ees to show up for work, or leaving
without reporting; and tardy,' ab-
sent, or indifferent workers,
Also, an employee must get along
with other People, He must have
a business personality. Business
must have leadership to cope with
changing conditions. A secretary
