CRAWFORD ds HETHERINGTON Wingham, Ontario Solicitors for the nxecutrik 7:14:21b MARVIN 11.111 YE NATIONAL POLICY FOR CONSERVATION A nation-wide conservation plan, based on a comprehensive aerial survey of the country, was pro- posed in the House of Commons last week by W. Marvin Howe, M,P, for Wellington-Huron. Mr, Howe, speaking in support of a plea for a Peminion-Frovincial conservation conference, told mern- hers of the House that money spent on conservation projects might help to eliminate the neces- sity of disaster funds. Mr, Howe said that the Grand River conservation scheme, sched- uled for completion in 1957, is setting pattern which might be followed in the rest of Canada. Such a project along the Humber River valley might have averted the catastrophe brought about by Hurricane Hazel on the Humber, the Nottawasaga and other rivers in .Western Ontario, the member said, He asked if. it would not he better to spend money on con- servation projects, rather than on disaster funds, after the damage has been done. Taking part in House debate on ti private members' resolution pro- posing a Dominion-Provincial con- ference on conservation, and look- ing to a nation-wide policy on soil, forest and water conservation and land use, Mr: Howe said Canada has a "second chance" to rebuild her renewable resources. More than Dams The question of conservation was bigger than just devising means of holding• hack the waters• in river valleys, he said. The in- discriminate cutting of forests and soil erosion were cause and effect which had to be considered. Mr. Howe said that there were many districts in Southern Ontario which at one time, supported whole - communities and which now were pictures of dilapidated and broken- down buildings and eroded soil. The people had been compelled to move because of improper methods of land use; the land no longer would provide a livelihood, Canadians ,must be brought to realize the necessity for a national policy of conservation of renewable resources, a policy which would provide a comprehensive program across the whole country, the speaker said, Miss E. Richardson. Passes in Hospital Elizabeth 13, Richardson, of Tees- water, passed away in Wingham General Hospital, on Sunday, 'fol- lowing a stroke two weeks ago. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs, Walter Richardson, of Culross, and was in her 81st. 'year, For over forty years she served as a practical nurse in Mt.-- loss and Culross Townships and was well known as a friend in need in the district... She leaves to mourn her three sisters, Mrs, James Hughes and Mrs. Walter Pinnell, of Tenswater and 'Mrs. Agnes McCullough, of Qu'Appelle, Sask.; and two brothers George of Guelph, and John, Teeswater. .
