Because a church organ could not
be Played, the whole world sings srifl
appreciates the favorite carol, "Si-
lent Night." For well over a hundred
years it •has been sung, till, pow it
has been translated into almost every
known tongue and has been arranged
for every type of musical instrument,
Frans Gruber, organist in the
church Which oceppigd the central
place in , the square' in Oberndorf,
nestled in the Bavorian Alps, made
the startling. discovery that something
Was wrong with,tke ehurchorgan and
that not a note would come from it.
To add to the difficulty,, the organ's
condition had not been discovered till
Christmas Eve...Oberndorf was snow-
bound, It was not possible to go be-
yond, the confines of the village to
find someone who could repair the
damaged instrument and Franz Gru-
ber was almost in tears as he reflect-
ed on Christmas without music. •
To his pastor, Josef Mohr, he went
with the sad story, and, in a last ges-
ture of hope mingled with despair, he
suggested that Mohr might compose
a new Christmas song which could be
sung without the use of the organ.
Reading again the familiar Christ-
Inas story, Mohr came upon the verse,
"Unto you is born this day in the
city of David 1, He sat meditating
on these words long into the night,
and, as if by Divine direction, set
down on paper his thoughts,
Gruber, early the next day, seized
the manuscript and composed a Sirripla
melody, finishing the task just as the
congregation gathered In church for
the Christmas service. Present was
one villager who could pick out tunes
on a guitar. He was asked to provide
the accompaniment for the carol.
The people of Oberndorf loved the
song at once, and its fame, as well
as Its words and music, soon spread
out from the little valley, throughout
Germany and Europe and finally to
the other continents. Josef Mohr and
Franz Gruber had given the world
one of the most beautiful and best
roved of Christmas carols.
For many years it was known as,
"Song from Heaven", but no matter
which title it was known by, the
carol soon found a warm place in the
hearts of men and women everywhere
and at the thought and sentiments
which lie deep in the heart.
'Walkerton Rinks flare
A superior brand of good curling

ditions, made the trip at the invitation
of the Wingham Club.
Two eight end games were played,
with the Wingham curlers ,having a
slight edge in the total aggregate
Score.
The highlight game of the evening
was an extra end game b&ween Har-

rison's, ring of Walkerton, with Mor-
rison winning the game with his last
rock. Walkerton skips were R. J.

The first round robin of the coiling
season will see the finals being played
this week. This has been a short draw
as quite a number of curlers don't
get the time and the bug to really
get down to serious curling until
after the Christmas season,

It is hoped to have a double draw
9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Boxing Day at
