TEN THE WINGHAM ADVANCE-TIMES Wednesday, July 22, 1953 With the 1953 fishing season now in full swing the largemouth bass is coming into his own again, While some may consider he's not so hard to handle on light tackle as the small- er smallmouth bass, many sportsmen prefer the largemouth, even though he rarely jumps and generally quits sooner. He's not so moody as the smailmouth. The largemouth is found throughout most of the Province, in the lower Great Lakes and rivers and connecting waters, in Georgian Bay and Kawar- tha and Rideau Lakes and countless smaller lakes and ponds. It prefers quiet, weedy waters, even lakes with muddy bottoms, and is us- ually found in shallower water than the smallmouth. It is subject to wide colour variations and in some sections is known as green bass. It is blackish- green above in rushy shallows and bays such as Georgian Bay, shading to light green and yellow on the flanks. In other waters ,it may be blackish green on the back, fading to grayish-green and grayish-yellow on the sides. The boney upper jaw extends back of the eye, whereas the smallmouth's jaw does not. He's a chunkier and heavier fish, too, with disproportion- ate head and large mouth and is not quite as "streamlined" as the small- mouth. "Aplites salmoides," the largemouth, may be taken readily on live bait, such as frogs, worms, grasshoppers, hel- gramites and minnows, strikes at "bass bugs," spinners, spoons and plugs, but probably prefers frogi. Fly fishermen usually find the large- mouth variety much more interested in flies than the smailmouth, The limit in Ontario is six per day, not less than ten inches in length, accord- ing to the Department of Lands and Forests. Officials of the Department were on hand for the opening of the bass season at Long Point Bay on Lake Erie. Anglers reported the fishing there was never so good. Officials are trying to determine the status of bass spawning during the early part of the season and hope to use the re- sults in determining future opening dates. Anglers were asked to make their catches available to the officials who measured the fish, took scales for age indentification and preserved viscera for further study. All fish were return- ed to the fortunate owners -cleaned. Study of the viscera will reveal what percentage of fish had completed spawning on opening day, June 25, and succeeding days. The experiment 'was directed by A. H. Berst, Lake Erie district fisheries biologist. Conserva- tion officers assisted at Turkey Point, St. Williams dock, Port Rowan docks and other points. The first quarterly table and esti- mate of production of commercial fish taken in Ontario shows a significant increase for 1953 over 1952 of a million pounds-a greater production in all waters except Lake Superior where a decrease was noted in the sucker and whitefish catch. The 1953 over-all increase is due mainly to the catch in Lake Erie which shows a marked rise in the production of whitefish (306,000 lbs,) blue pickerel (312,000 lbs), 'and yellow pickerel (120,000 lbs.) with an Increase in coarse species taken in both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Among principal production changes noted for the three-month period, Jan- uary 1 to March 31, as compared with similar figures for 1952 are: Blue pickerel-Up from 188,000 lbs. to 500,000 lbs, in Lake Erie.
