Hospital Plan
For Atom Bomb
Is Recommended
Even an old-fashioned atomic bomb "
like the one used on Japan would
place an overwhelming load on Can-
adian hospitals, points out Dr, K. C,
Charron, principal medical officer of
the Civil Defence Health Planning
Group, Ottawa. Tens, of thousands of
casualties would inundate hospitals in
the disaster area, even if the hospitals
themselves were unaffected by the
blast.
"The value of a definite and well-
organized disaster plan cannot be
overestimated," decla!res Dr. Charron.
"Such a plan should' be prepared by
every hospital. And it is not some-
thing which can be worked 'out when
disaster is upon one, It requires care-
ful prior planning, it must be kept up
to date, and key staff must have a
thorough knowledge of disaster as-
signments. It should.be a written plan
and available to all key staff at all
times."
Dr. Charron warns that in the event
of atomic attack hospitals in disaster
areas, if usable at all, would be faced
with loss of staff and possibly of es-
sential utilities.
The Department of National Health
,and Welfare has prepared Et disaster
plan kit for hospitals and published a
pamphlet entitled "Hospital Services,
and Casualty Records," It urges air
'Canadian hospitals to set up emer-
gency programs which in the event of
all-out catastrophe could be integrated
into an overall hospital disaster plan
for all levels. A basic" uniformity of
plans plus extreme flexibility to meet
all possible contingencies is funda-
mental.
