have ham memories Pt the past We
younger People have memories, hut
they don't date back into that period
when man was more dependent upon
his neighbour.
There are many of the old time
habits still in use, though, thank good-
ness, little things that bring us to a
greater appreciation of what has come
and gone. For example the other night
was working in the garden, when
across the river there floated the
sounds of voices singing hymns. It
took me a few moments to realize
that here was one of the old time
camp meetings, being held across the
river. We don't have many of these
any more, but there were plenty of
them in the past when the travelling
evangelists set up their tents and
preached to the folks who gathered,
Perhaps we need more of this influ-
a page of tender history' that ',dates
back a long way. The story of the old
kissing bridge and the reluctant swain.
and bashful maiden is indeed worth.
recalling. The bridge, the horse and
buggy and the corduroy roads all
bring back pleasant memories, and
few people realize that those old cor-,
uroy logs are still holding up many of
of our modern roads today.
Many other habits and characteris-
tics pf the past are still with us, and
one of these recently brought out and
given a thorough dusting off, partic-
ularily in the storm areas has been the
barn raisings and roofing bees, The
community barn thrashings have gone
by and so have the silo fillings, the
wood bees and the butchering bees,
but you still see an occasional farmer,'s
wife rendering lard in the big black
kettle in the back yard.
Farm women still hold quiltings.
there are still fowl suppers and the
occasional strawberry social, but the
C-1553C
young marrlea couple nag rernalnen -
although there have been some altera,
tiona to the common practice, some
that could very well be dispensed with
at times. Hallowe'en isn't nearly as
important, and neither is the 12th of
July, but the fall fair is much more
important.
The old kitchen range with the wat-
erfront, reservoir and warming closet
isn't nearly as popular and the jars
of preserves have been replaced by
cans. The meat barrel is replaced by
the deep freeze unit and the locker,
and the warm brick by the electric
heating pad. Yes times have changed,
but memories linger on and it is nice
to notice that our people are still keep-
ing some of these memories with
them, .Pr community that forgets it's
past, hasn't much of a future, The
man who reminisces also looks ahead,
and we must have foresighted people
to advance our civilization and main-
tain our way of life. All the Massey
Commissions on arts and sciences are
useless, if people forget to look back
and use those memories to fashion the
future.
KITCHEN SHOWER FOR
JEAN PENNINGTON
A kitchen shower for Jean Penning-
ton, bride-to-be of this month, was
held at the home of Miss Jean Elliott,
on Tuesday evening, July 7th. About
twenty guests were present and the
bride-elect was the recipient of many
lovely and useful gifts. The hostess
and her mother served a dainty lunch.
CHIN FAMILY BUY
TORONTO HOME
The Chin family of Lucknow, have
bought a home-in Toronto at 304 Glen
Road, and the mother, Mrs. Rose Chin,
has taken up residence in the city re-
ports the LucknoVe Sentinel. Albert is
remaining in charge of the restaurant,
and is being assisted during the sum-
mer by Morley and other members of
the family.
While the severing of the Lucknow,
asociations is not complete, it is 'the
first step in what may eventually lead
to the departure of the entire family
to Toronto, and such a move will be
most sincerely regretted by Lucknow
and district residents without excep-
tion.
The Chin family, individually and
collectively, have been well mannered
and exemplary in their conduct, They
have played a leading and outstanding
role in church, scholastic and sporting
activities here and have won much
favourable publicity throughout Wes-
tern Ontario net only for themselves
but for the Sepoy Town.
They have been an ambituous, stud-
ious family, and Toronto and the lar-
ger centres afford them the opportun-
ities and associations that Lucknow
cannot offer as they reach adulthood.
The best wishes of this ccmmunity go
with them, and no doubt Lucknow will
always be home to the Chins no mat-
ter where they may be,
Charlie Chin and his wife, Rose,
came to Lucknow from Newmarket in
1928. Charlie died in September of
1951.
There are fourteen children in the
family, eleven sons and three daugh-
ters: Jim, Harry, Sam, Frank, Bill,
"SLIMY MONSTER"
AT NEW HAMBURG
EVADES SEAR'CLIERi4,
The "slimy monster" that left its
track through New Hamburg and then
disappeared beside the Nith River has
failed to appear again.
The entire town is on the alert and
Chief Constable George Thomas, who
has taken one shot at it has searched
diligently for it since.
Meanwhile, as the mystery attracts
considerable interest, residents have
various theories to account for the
slimy trail leading through town.
Some believe it may be a big lizard or
perhaps an alligator escaped from a
circus,
The track was wider than a bicycle
trail, residents said, and a peculiar
three-toed imprint accompanied it.
Most agree the trail is different from
anything ever seen hereabouts before,
