True, every precaution has been
taken now, but the steps should have
been taken before although it is ques-
tionable what could have been done.
In the first place there must have
been a beginner in this epidemic and
authorities are at a loss to say who
or where it started. The infected hogs
had passed through so many commun-
ity sales, and so many hands along
the way, that the disease was well
spread by the time it was discovered.
It is generally agreed that one of the
main sources of cholera in the past,
has been through the feeding of un-
cooked garbage to hogs, garbage that
contained scraps of infected pork, for
humans can eat pork that comes from
mildly infected hogs without suffering
ill effects. The garbage theory has
been the cause in most of the recent
outbreaks in the States.
Assuming that it began with un-
cooked garbage, it is now no secret
that it was given a helping hand in
its rapid spread by the many specula-
tors who frequent the community
sales. Community sales are fine things
and they are doing a fine service to
the farmers who only have a few
hogs, or one cow to sell now and then.
But they are also a virtual goldmine
for the many traders, speculators and
hangers-on, who are to be found at
just about every sale with a small
truck or ,a big trailer. Every lot of pigs
sold seasonably will find their way
into those trailers or trucks along
with a couple of dozen others from
goodness knoivs where. Tomorrow,
they will be trucked to another sale
and resold, at a tidy profit, Some-

It seems as though the farmers are
in the middle of a vicious \ circle with
all sorts of deadly plagues and dis-
eases circling around, waiting for the
time and place to strike, There are
crop diseases, pests, plagues, storms
and animal diseases, Last year we had
foot and mouth disease, the most
deadly of all livestock disesases. Out
west the farmers have recently been
faced with an epidemic Of rabies, and
now, down here in Southern Ontario,
we have an outbreak of the deadly hog
cholera. hog cholera, the killer, with
a 100% death rate and no cure, has
struck in severe Western , Ontario
communities, and the healthof ani-
mals branch has acted quickly, slaugh-
tering the infected herds, burying
them in deep pits, and covering them
with quick lime to prevent the spread
of the disease if at all possible,

.THE TRAVEL TREND this summer will be coronation-wards for
many. This housewife may not be one of those to see London's
dramatic celebrations, but she's about to follow the trend in home
decoration by giving her walls the dramatic interest of new deep
tones—Royal Red, Windsor Blue or any other of the nine special
