The Fanning Mill

VAIRM YOUTH ll'IROBLEM
It Seems that for years people on
the farm have been complaining about
the movement of farm young people
from the country where they were
born, to the urban offices and Indus-
tries, where they can be employed in
what are usually referred to as "white
collar jobs."
This still goes on, and I wonder if,
after all, it is such a dangerous prac-
tice as we care to make it. We say
that the best brains are leaving the
farm and going into industry. We.
complain that the farms are under-
staffed, undermanned, that the farm-
ers are overworked, and all the while
the sons and daughters are going
away from the farm simply because
the glow of the bright lights and the
amusement centres is attracting their
attention. Is this actually the ease, or
are we making a mountain out of a
mole-hill?
It is my firm conviction that this
is not as dangerous a practice as we
care to think it is. After all, a farm
can support only so Many People, In
grandfather's day, when they raised
larger families than are being raised
today, the eldest son usually stayed
around home, with the promise that
he would get the farm -when dad was
finished with it, The three or four
other sons were faced with the pro-
blem of finding a way of financing
their start on their own farm, or mov-
ing away to some other industry. In
those days there were many sections
of unopened land in the Canadian
west, and it claimed many of these

The new Reliance gasoline at our pumps is the
best we have ever marketed. It isn't a so-called
improved gasoline. New Reliance is all new.
New Reliance's anti-knock characteristics are
substantially increased as a result of better
octane ratings. Volatility factors, which
influence starting, acceleration, warm-up and
mileage, are based on new, higher standards—,
rigidly controlled.
If yours is a recent model car with a high
compression ratio engine, you can count on -
better performance when you tank up with new
Reliance Ethyl. All cars and most trucks
perform better with either new Reliance Ethyl
or Reliance Standard
For easier "cold engine" starts—greater
freedom from vapor locking—faster acceleration
—quicker warm-ups—AND LOWER COST
OF OPERATION PER MILE—see your
neighbourhood Reliance service station.

have the advantage of high 8000
educations, there were no openings in
a rapidly expanding industrial (level,
Opulent, and the only thing they knew
was farming or some other form of
Inanlial. labour, Today, our fatailies
are being educated, and I think you
will agree that it is better to educate
the people who, will not be needed on
the farm and give them a Chance to
get into something Stable, than try
and keep them around the farm where
they will be forced to take a cut of
the farrn Income,
With modern machinery one man
can, today, handle the same acreage
and in many eases a larger acreage
than his father or his grandfather,
What is the use of tying dawn a largo
family to the family farm, just be-
cause you don't want to gee them
start out on their own, There are few
areas left to pioneer, save the field
of industry, There are no new areas
to be opened 'up, If the young people
are to be given a chance to make
something of themselves they are
going to have to be prepared to fill
the only openings available, and these
appear to be industry, the teaching or
nursing professions, or similar fields,
Sure, we like to see the young
people around the farm, IAA I am con-
vinced that we are keeping enough
on the farm to keep our agriculture
industry on an even keel. It is better
to have one young person who is in-
terested in agriculture, than ten who
are uninterested, And remember this;
every person who leaves agriculture
is a potential customer, rather than
an additional producer. In these days
of surpluses this is a strong point in
favour of educating our children who
are not inclined toward Agriculture.

Your pullets need real. growth if they are to
be in tip- top shape next, fall to produce
large eggs early, during ,the high price
season, and keep on laying steadily.
To get that real growth the pullets must be
'fed a good balanced ration. It is not good
enough to raise pullets just on pasture and
grain. They will not lay as many eggs
during the following year nor will they
produce large eggs as early as balance-fed.
