CALGARY FAMILY "ADOPTS" PET SQUIRREL
—Central Press Canadian
Jet propulsion may be strictly for the mechanized birds, as far as
most citizens of this supersonic century are concerned, but there's
a family in Calgary who would argue the point. After living in.
the same house as a pet squirrel for the past 10 months, the Green
family are convinced that their furry friend has cracked as many
sound barriers as he has nuts in his frantic flights through their
once-peaceful rooms. "Kippy," the Green's pet squirrel, was picked
up at a mountain camp last June by a group of wolf cubs. The
Green family adopted her, took her home and for weeks kept her
alive with eyedropper feedings of warm milk and liquid pablum.
She was a quiet, frightened animal in those days and spent most
of her time snuggled in a box of batten, asleep. But as the months
went on and she grew strong on a new diet of nuts, thick pablum
from a bowl, small portions of apple and now and again a bit of
chocolate, "Nippy" gained confidence in her surroundings and made
friends with 'Mr. and Mrs. Green and their young sons, Edward
and David, seen above with pet. Now she is like "one of the familY."

Free Estimates
This in itself is not any great excep-
SLIP COVERS tion, but there is a point that is an
exception. This young fellow can tell
you at the spur of the moment, without
consulting his records, how many sows
FURNITURE are in the herd, how many litters were
farrowed last year, the year before,
- o - o and years before that again. He cars
tell you the average size of the farrow-
ed litter and the weaned litter, over a
period of years in fractions. He knows
the average weight of his little pigs
at weaning time from each litter, and
he knows exactly the percentage of
sows and hogs farrowed in each litter.
He knows 'how much feed each sow
consumes to raise her litter to the
eight week weaning age, how much
it costs to raise that litter and how
much profit he made from each litter.
I asked him when he got the time to
keep these accounts and he said that
all he needed was a few moments a
day, a note book and a pencil.
Can you, as a farmer, give even one
of tl•ese figures when asked? Could
you even give a close estimate? If you
can you are an exception. But we
need a lot of people to invest in
scratch pads, pencils and a.few mom-
ents a day. There are plenty of farm
RECORDS ON THE VAItal
One of the strong points that the
extension workers have been trying
to drive home to the farmers of today
is the value of keeping accurate re-
cords, so that they know whether they
are making, or losing money. One of
the main reasons advanced by farmers
for not keeping accurate records, is
that they "haven't the time." This is
one of the oldest excuses offered in
the civilized world, and if you ask
me, it's just about worn out, If you
haven't the time to keep track of your
business and find out whether you
are making or losing money, then
some day you'll find that you haven't
much time left to balance the budget.
I have found that the younger gen-
eration of farmers are the ones who
are taking' the steps required in this
field of farm book-keeping. Our best
examples of accurate farm accounts
can be found on the farms, owned and
cperated by the young men who are
farming under the Veterans' Land Act.
This is one point stressed by the V.L.
A., and it is one that will no doubt
stay with these boys as long as they
stay on the farm, Also, it is very
evident that the junior farmers and
the present 4-H club members are go-
ing to be good farm accountants. First
of all, keeping accurate accounts is
part of their project, be it in calf,
swine, farm machinery maintenance,
or the other 4-H clubs. Many of their
points in the final accounting come
from an inspection of these account
books,
I would like to make an illustration.
The other day I happened to be visit-
ing at the home of a young fellow
about 25 years of age, who had started
out in the hog business as a teenager,
a member of the swine club. Since
then, he has kept accurate records,
Combined this with good management,
and at the present time he has a herd
