Them days we hear a Jot Abopt
education, The expense of educating
our children is usually good for a red
het discussion any time a gr9oP of
ratepayers get their heads together
and there are points that merit
an argument, such as the cost of build-
ing schools and the cost of transport-
ing children to the schools, Sometimes
I wonder if in the course of argument,
we don't' put too much emphasis on
the expense and not enough on the re-
suits that are obtained, I don't think
Lhat you can measure education in
dollars and cents. True, the old argu-
ment always comes up that there were
a great many people who gained fame
and fortune, without even passing
their entrance examinations.
• There is the ether story that "I
paid for my children's education and
I don't see why I should have to help
to educate some one else's children,"
And finally, we hear charges that the
schools today are too fancy, there are
too many extras that they are spoil-
ing the children, wasting their -time
on unnecessary subjects that they will
never use. \
My opinions are something along
these lines. I feel that it is impossible
to have too much education, and I
certainly wish that I had a lot more
of it. I wish that the advantages and
slaPortunities made available to the
children of the rural areas today, were
available when I went to school, True,
it takes time to acquire an education,
hut that knowledge costs you nothing
to carry around, and you never know
when you will use it.
There are a lot of points in favour
of the little township school house,
and we all appreciate these points.

agriculture and even the industrial

Now, in the Bel Air series, Chevrolet creates
for you a new class of Canadian cars. Here
is .distinction of appearance od fineness of
appointments far beyond anything in Chev-
rolet's field. Here is your opportunity to own
a truly distinguished and luxurious car with-
Out paying the price premium formerly as-
sociated with such high quality.
morning, they did board in town, if they wanted a high school education.
But if you count hack over the years
and measure the development of our
country, you'll find that these people
had no other alternative. They didn't
do these things because they wanted
to, it was ..a matter of necessity, rather
than choice. Just because grandad
drove a horse, and buggy is no reason
wily you should shun the modern
automobile and do the same as he did
Education today is more than read-
in', writtint and 'xithmatie, it's much
wider than that, Our educational
system emphasizes. the value of gee-
PhYsicaI training, the develop-
ment of hobbies and„ handicrafts, and
all the while the children are being
taught by ,aetual practice to get alOng
with peciPle in different walks of life,
different districts, and those with dif,
ferent interests altogether from the
farm. It broadens, their outlook, teach-
es them to get along with other people,
teaches them how to act in public, how
to take part in public meetings and
organizations.
Education, as I said before, cannot
be measured in actual dollars and
cents, It cannot be measured in units
by the inch or by the gallon. It can
only be measured 'in the future devel-
opment of our people, and our country.
The only field where our educational
set up is weak today, is that of adult
education. If we had more of this, in
the way of short courses in human
relations and current events we would
have a lot more people with a broader
outlook in general. Instead of worry-
ing so much about how much it costs
us to educate our children, let's find
a few ways to invest in adult educa-
tion and try and keep up with the
young folk:
