We Kaye all heard that the Sunny
South is the home of hospitality, and
you have ,also heard that our neigh-
bours to the south of us, in the States
are more than willing to Ian over
backwards to welcome their friends
from the north. Well, for four days of
last week. I had the pleasure of Aar,
ing some of that hospitality, as a num-
ber of district farmers, attended the
annual Ralston Purina farm tour to
St. Louis, and Gray Summit, Missouri.
When I speak of hospitality, I am
speaking of the real, down to earth
type of hospitality that makes you
feel at home, makes you feel as if
there is someone in this country who
thinks you area part of things. While
our tour of the St. Louis area was a
busy one, and we didn't have too much
time to spend visiting in the city, or
Surrounding countryside, we did find
out one thing. As soon as*the name
Canada was&nentioned, everyone
perked up their ears and paid strict
attention.
For example, the lady who was

in Alaska. The taxi drivers, who are
noted for their daring driving, make
it a point to tell you of all the city's
history, and point ont the highlights,
The office workers and the clerks in
the stores seem to have a smile
on their face from morning to night,
without it aPPering forced. You can't
help but feel at home in St. Louis,
for everyone, black or white, young
or old, rich or poor drives that point
home. Ws a characteristic that we
here in Canada could very well devel-
op.
In Canada it would be consider-
ed rather poor manners to strike up
a conversation with a stranger in a
railway station. In Chicago, people
walk up and ask you where you are
from and we were able to have a short
talk with a couple from Los Angeles,
who were very interested in Canada.
,There is a world of public relations
work to be done with our neighbours
to the south of us, and they are beg-
ging for information about our coun-
try and about our people.
Most of the fellows on the tour, and
there were something over 300 folks
from Ontario, Quebec and the Mari-
times were impressed by the white
frame houses everywhere, the lack of
stone, brick or cement structures, the
predominance of corn fields and the
swine herds, feeding out in the fields
all winter. The large Belted Hamp-
shire hogs, and the Red Dimes, were
mostly lard type hogs, but they seem
to be a lot easier handled than our
hogs that are stable fed all winter, 1
saw one dairy herd, that was fed out-
doors all winter with self feeders and
open shed housing. This in Indiana,
where the weather is not too much
milder than ours. The huge elevators
along the railwayd seemed to spell a
wealth of ;grain crops in Michigan,
REEVE GETS RIG LAVOIE
During last Thursday's sitting in
the annexation hearing here, Reeve
L. Weichel got a big laugh with a re-
mark which, while bordering on the
indelicate, was accepted with good
humor by every man and woman pre-
sent, probably because it expressed a
thought in the minds of each of them.
Testimony during the day had been
lohg and detailed, None of it was ex-
citing. A little of it was interesting.
Most of it was downright dull. The
town's sewer system and sewage dis-
posal plant had been the subject of
much talk. Effluent, drainage, septic
tanks and other kindred topics had
been discussed at length. Just as the
sitting concluded D. E. Wade, counsel
for the town, put Reeve Weichel on
the stand to ask him still more ques-
tions about the sewage disposal plant.
Before answering Mr. Wade's ques-
tion Reeve Weichel smiled and said:
"Well, I'm no sanitary engineer, so
Frn speaking as a layman, but it
seems to me there's been a lot of sol-
ids kicked around here today." ,-El-
mira Signet.

We have examined the books and records of the Wingham District
High School Board for the year ended 31 December, 1952 and in our opinion
the above statement of Receipts and Disbursments is correct, according to
the books and records and information furnished. The Government Grants
were over estimated in the budget by $10,000.00 and in our opinion this is the
reason for the overdraft at the end of the year.
