Gowdy, Reeve, Lift Midwinter Morale Wanted, a cure for midwinter blues about weary clothes. These sprightly pictures of spring fashion openings are no help, One plods through today's slush thankful for the few tired gar- ments one has. Hopes to scrape to- gether enough money for a new out- fit by spring. What's the answer? Sew a cheery new coloured lining into an old jacket. The big, bright fashion news for spring is jackets lined to match a dress. Linings are meant to' show. They will be in flowery prints or pale pastels. So—if you're feeling low, pick up a sparkling remnant to contrast with or match the colour in a dress or, blouse you already have. Choose your lining in a colour which will be holding its own by spring—reddish hues, pink, softer shades of Yellow, green or brown, If you haven't much of a rain- bow to choose from, line your jacket in any shade with a new tone to it, and wear it with your haste b1aelr dress, Sewing lining sounds tricky, but it Don't let that word tailoring put you off. ;[f you haven't a clue about simple tailoring steps, drop into your nearest sewing center. 'Fhp big thing in handling lining is the order in which you take each step. If you do it witho an experienced person at your side in a sewing center for the first time--tailoring won't awe you any more. Changing a lining is a good in- troduction to tailoring details, since your jacket will be already made. You can see the way the jacket is finished when you take the old lining out. Re- move it carefully. You will want to use it for your pattern. Here are a few points sewing cen- ters suggest you watch. Remember when cutting your new lining to make allowance for a small pleat in the centre back and at front ehouldet seams. These pleats in the old lining are not just a style whim They are put into all well tailored suits for ease in fit. The entire jacket should be assembled-yours will be in any ease- facing attached and sleeves set in, be- fore your lining is inserted. You will need to rip the bottom jacket hem and hems at sleeve ends. Lining pieces should be joined at side and shoulder seams and pleats pressed in and tack• ed before it is pinned to the inside of the jacket. The next step will be greatly simp- lified Els the jacket can be placed wrong side out on a dress form. Then follow the sewing center procedure after smoothing and pinning the lin- ing in place. Stitch lining, first to neck, armholes, shoulder and front facings, by hand. Seam up your sleeve linings on the machine, and insert with hand stiching last. Lining can be caught around the inside bottom of a short jacket, but should be hemmed separately to hang free in a long coat, with only art occasional tacking stitch to hold it in place, The final step is hand hemming of bottom and sleeve ends and your jacket is like new. What a lift that colour gives. Be sure to wear it open. Shed some of the glow on others, CHICKEN GRIT TO RESCUE OF CARS Chicken grit might be used by hens to get a firmer grip on the shells of eggs they lay but Basil Kelly of Gode- rich uses it so that the tires of his car can get a firmer grip on any ice covered or snow covered roads. All he has to db is move a little lever on his steering wheel and the white grit pours in front of the back wheels of his car. No pushin'. No swearine No heart failure. No being stranded on a back road with no one near to give you a push..Just pull the lever and the white manna' to free your car comes forth. The mechanical equipment is in the trunk of the car with funnels holding the grit and also tubes going down to a position in front of the back wheels. It's a new gadget made by a firm at Eastview, Ontario. Basil car- ries in the back trunk of the car about a third of a bag of grit for re-fill pur- poses. Only trouble has been our summer weather this winter, He has- n't needed it so far to free his car. Only time he has used it has been to show friends hpw it works—if he ever is stuck.—Goderich Signal-Star.
