THE WINGHAM ADVANCE-TIMES
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 19031
CONSERV. CLUB
HOLDS ANNUAL
The lack of a game warden... in the
Wingham district and the increasing
numbers of black snakes on our
streams were two of the main topics
discussed at the first annual meeting
of the Lucknow, Teeswater, Wingham
Conservation Club held here in Wing-
ham on Friday evening, The same
slate of officers were again installed
for the coming year, headed by Alex
W. Hamilton, of Lucknow, and station
agent here in Wingham, Two new
zone vice-presidents were elected to
fill vacancies, Mr, Attridge, for Luck-
now and George Bannerman, repre-
senting Teeswater, A bountiful tur-
key banquet was held at the Queen's
Hotel, prior to the annual meeting at
the town hall.
"This club has accomplished more
in its six months of operations than
the separate clubs from each of these
towns and townships, have done in a
year," stated Mr, Hamilton. Reports
from the various vice-presidents re-
vealed an amazing amount of work
had been done already in that six
month period.
Officers who were returned to of-
fice are: deputy president, Joseph
Clark, Wingham; secretary-treasurer,
George Orvis, Wingham; zone vice-
presidents for Teeswater, Albert Wor-
rell, W, J. Freeman; for Wingham,
Donald Cook, Russell Farrier, Frank
Caskanette; Lucknow, W. J. McDon-
ald, Raymond Ackert; Zone secretary-
treasurers, Teeswater, Hector King;
Lucknow, Wally Breckles; Wingham,
George Orvis.
At the banquet held in the Queen's
Hotel, Rev. Micklejohn, of Lucknow,
was toastmaster and proposed the
toast to the club and Alex Hamilton,
the president, replied. Mr. Wm. Mc-
Donald of Lucknow, proposed a toast
to the ladies and Mrs. H. King, of
Teeswater, replied.
A number of suggestions were forth-
coming with regard to the elimination
of black snakes, which have become
a serious menace to fish. The sugges-
tions included shoots by a number of
club members in the early spring and
mid-summer, and the paying of boun-
ties to youngsters for shooting them.
Mr. John Hanna, MPP, who was
present at the annual meeting, spoke
briefly to the club members on the
part the province was playing in this
work.
An expert on reforestation work
from Bruce County, Mr. Johnston, told
how better fishing could be had
through the preservation of woodlots,
the planting of trees and fire preven-
tion, "The streams must be brought
back to their natural condition," he
pointed out. The .ni as closed
