Annual Meeting The Woman's Association of the United Church held its annual meeting in the church basement, The presi- dent, Mrs. L. Hopper, presided and opened the meeting with a Christmas Carol, The secretary's and treasurer's reports were received and the final business of the year dealt with, Money donations were made to the choir and the Gift fund of the afternoon Auxil- iary of the W. M. S. Quite a number of the holiday bells were received. Roll call was responded to by a verse of Christmas Scripture, The report of the Nominating Committee was pre- sented by the convener, Mrs. J. The White Gift service was discussed and arranged to be held the second Sunday in December, Rev. Mr. Cox was present and con, ducted the election of officers for the coming year. Mrs, R. Chamney had charge of the Worship service, Theme, "Christmas, The Season of Birth and Re-birth." It opened with the hymn, "0 Little Town of Bethlehem," and Call to Worship, followed with prayer by Mrs. Chamney. A special white gift offer- ing will be taken on Sunday for over- seas relief. The meeting closed with prayer by the pastor. The members of the Mission Band met in the church school room on Sunday afternoon with a good atten- dance The meeting opened by re- peating the member's purpose. The Scripture lesson was read by Ruth Howatt from Luke 2:7-21. Prayer was by Mrs. Norman McDowell. Readings were given by Gwenn Mc- Dowell and Donna Walden. The story was told by Mrs. Blair. The election of officers for 1953 is as follows: president, Doreen Howatt; vice pres., Ronald Snell; sec., Donna Walden; treasurer, Bobby Cook. The meeting closed with prayer by Mrs. Blair. Annual Meeting The annual meeting of the Sabbath School was held on Wednesday after-1 noon, December 3rd, with the rector, iyl Rev. C. Washington, in charge. Mr. Norman McDowell led in prayer after the opening hymn. The minutes of the last meeting were read by the sec. Graeme McDowell. The follow- ing were elected for the coming year: supt., Norman McDowell; assist. supt., Howard Campbell, Mr. Marvin Mc- Dowell; sec.-treas , Graeme McDow- were installed for the coming year, President, Mrs. Lyle Hopper; 1st. vice president, Mrs. George Michie; i 2nd, vice-president, Mrs. Ken Wheeler; ! Coultes; At the close of the service, Mrs, R Chamney was •made a life member or the society, The president, Mrs. E Anderson made fitting remarks re- garding Mrs. Chamney's faithful ser vices in the past. Taken completely by surprise, Mrs. Chamney thanked the members for the honor bestowed upon her. Mrs. (Rev.) Cox closed the meeting with prayer. W. L The Christmas meeting of the Wo- men's Institute will be held in the Club room on Tuesday, December 16th. at 2.30 p.m. The conveners are Mrs. H. Wheeler and Mrs. Jas. Michie. The roll call will be responded to by reading a Christmas greeting in verse. The address will be given by Mrs. N. Keating, of Wingham; music, Carol singing. Mrs. E. Anderson will con- duct a Quiz. Lunch committee are: Mrs. H. Wheeler, Mrs. J. Michie, Mrs. G. Nicholson and Edith Procter. WESTFIELD Personals Mr Armond McBurney returned on Saturday from Michigan where he had spent a few weeks. Mrs. J. L, McDowell and Gordon visited Friday evening with Rev. Harold and Mrs. Snell, of Exeter. Mr. and Mrs Wesley Stackhouse and Miss Eva, of Brucefield, visited on Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. Norman McDowell. Messrs. Franklin and Cecil Camp- bell attended the Jr. Farmers 4-H Club at Rxeter on Friday evening. Cecil was awarded a couple of prizes. The Westfield school concert will be held on Thursday evening, Decem- ber 8th., at ' p.m. The children and teacher, Miss Eva Dow, are busy preparing the program, Mr. Wm. McDowell visited on Mon- day with Mrs. K, Cameron, of Bel- grave, Mr. Jim Buchanan has secured a position with the Good Roads' Com- pany at Goderich, Mrs, Marshal Stonehouse, of Bel- grave, visited one day last week with .Mrs. Alva McDowell. Mr, and Mrs. John Gear and family, of- Kitchener, spent the week-end with Mrs. J. L, McDowell. Misses Joan Kellough and Joann Duckworth, Goderich, at present of the Stratford Normal school, are teaching this week at the Westfield school. Mrs. Emerson Rodger was guest soloist on Friday morning on the "At Home with the Ladies" program over CKNX, Wingham, and will also be guest soloist the next two Friday mornings, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cook visited on Sunday with Mr ' and Mrs. Leon- ard Cook. Mr. Ken Boyd, of Brantford, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Ken- neth Campbell. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Buchanan visit- ed on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs Roland Vincent, of Blyth. Mr. Thos. Cook, and Miss Grace Snell, of Wingham, visited on Friday at the home of their brother, Mr. Walter Cook, and Mrs. Cook. , Mr and Mrs. Japer McBrian, of Goderich, visited on Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Snell. Brown of Walkerton NEW STREET LICrIIT FOR wm,Kmpro'N The $13,700 project of installing new street lights along Walkerton's "great white way" was commenced this week. The plan includes the placing of twen- ty-two cement and steel standards be- ginning at Mill Street near the grist mill and continuing to Peter St., at the Canada Packers plant. These stan- dards will be placed against the walls of business places and the street light will be extended out over the street on a long curved arm. This will do away with any wiring along the main street, There will be a single light of modern design on each standard. The Women's Missionary Society held their Christmas meeting on Wed- nesday afternoon, December 3rd., in the schoolroom of the church, with a fair attendance. Mrs. E. Anderson, president Con- ducted the business period. The sec- retary and trusurer's reports were re- ceived as read. Visits to the sick and shut-ins were reported. This increase in fee is required in view of the fact that the 50 cent fee heretofore collected has proven to be inadequate to meet the demands for payments out of the fund. Since 1947 when the fund was created payments out have exceeded $3,000,000. During the current year it has been necessary to obtain an advance of $300,000 from the Treasury Department in order to make the payments required. A further advance will be required to meet the payments anticipated before the end of the fiscal year (March 31, 1953).
