Some of the municipalities have already either renamed the old councils, or have made the plans for their elections. Some of the others are making plans for nomination dates, in the very near future. Prospective candidates are already shaking hands, patting backs, and wearing large smiles. Too bad some of these smiles wouldn't fast all year around, be diagnosed as a case of acute Dormatitis, because it is the period when everyone's interest in public affairs lies dormant. We kick about the council, kick about the reeve, and the mayor, chew about everything they do and say, but when we have Sunday in Lucknow with their daugh- ter, Mrs A. Porter and Mr. Porter. —Mrs. W. A. Beecroft Is on a trip to Florida with her aunt, Mrs. Shaw, of Kingston, and her cousins, Mr. and. Mrs. Ken Wood, of Toronto. —Miss H, 0. Martin returned home from Lucan on Monday evening after spending a few days with her sister, Mrs. T. A. Hodgins and Mr. Hodgins. —Mrs. Clarence Hunking and dau- ghter, of Gormley, and Mr, and Mrs. Melvin Phippen, of Peterborough, vis- ited with their parents, Mr, and Mrs, Cenclair Phippen. —Mr. and Mrs. Ignatius Kueneman, Mr. and Mrs, Clarence Ritchie, Mr. and Mrs. Seraphone Schwartz and daughter, Jeanette, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Goetz anC, son, Eugene, Mr, Ambrose Ste Marie and Mrs. Cletus Kueneman, all of Hanover, spent Sunday with Mrs. Francis Ste Marie and family, platform, or to nominate someone else to take their place, where are we? That's right, we are tried and found wanting. In most cases we don't even go. But what is perhaps a worse ailment is that of sitting stock still, say nothing, and then talking afterwards. If there is a nomination in your township, in the near future, get out to it. If there is an election in your township, get out and vote. Exercise your fran- chise, for there are thousands, mil- lions of people who haven't that privilege and, in most cases, they lost it because of indifference. When you are selecting a candidate, or voting for a candidate, check closely his qualifications, for the day of blind allegiance to old party policies, is long since past. There is no room for the old party man who would vote for a collie dog, if it ran for the party ticket. This has existed sons present, the three trustees and the caretaker, The trustees have to reappoint each other, or some other innocent ratepayers. Then they spend a lonesome afternoon carrying out business that you should be taking an interest in, It is your business, your money that is being spent, your school that is being heated and lm- proved, your children's source of learning and development that is be- ing taken care of. Men and women, young and old, make it a point this year to take a more active part in your municipal politics, and the affairs of your school section. You'll find that it is an education, and It gives you a great deal of personal satisfaction. THE VOICE OF TEMPERANCE Inertia is the major handicap of all good causes. It was said long ago by a very competent authority that whoever is not for the good cause is against it, This is a very important matter in a democracy where the theory is that people govern themselves. This places on them the responsibility of thinking for themselves. It also places on them the responsibility of making their convictions articulate. This boils down to the simple matter of saying- yes-or-no on every issue, (One of our live Huron County issues is the traffic in alcoholic beverages), There are some who would say--yes, con- cerning the inroads of this traffic. There are many who would say no, if they would just break through their ban of silence and inertia. More women saying no, in their homes and at their parties—more men saying no, in their clubs and in their municipal and county councils, that's how public opinion is created. In a democracy it is this public opinion that is the determining factor. Certainly the harm done by the liquor traffic is not something to be silent about. —Advertisement, —It's time for ECONOMY. Vote ROY ADAIR—your Reeve for 1953. P E RSONALS There is one deplorable condition that exists in our municipal struc- in municipal politics, as well as fed- ture. 'That condition could very well oral and provincial. We must vote for the man, not the affiliations. But perhaps the most important point to stress is "Vote as you like but be sure - to vote". This can also apply to the school meetings that are coming up shortly. All too often these meetings are held a chance to get out and hear their in empty schools with the only per- 1,3;MWz,10-1,ZW, 44-44WZ-WCW '041-A K--'1754 --4OZ-f...W.Z'Ag-e4-4JZ-"t--COZ-tEAMEA 10,4001.0.00amommu-nrer.arovres).0.0,...,emoos“.isast.c..0.).1¢7..•041Wramws.onsimwas....1145..0410.1.161RK.M0411111.011 6.1 THE SALVATI 3ki ARMY '91 Edward St., Wingham Special Evangelistic Services WED. & THURSDAY—Lieut. & Mrs. J.
