Ten years earlier
than men ...
usually at 55.
They also live longer. Busi-
ness women, therefore, re-
quire retirement income for
a much longer period of
time than men. Many women
find Mutual Life of Canada
policies, with their absolute
safety, their steady increase
in values and their long
record of generous dividend
payments, the best possible
way of providing adequate
income for the future.
Discuss your problem today
witlia Mutual Life of Canada
representative.

District Representative:
M. McPHAIL, WINGHAM
but it points out that it is a small
world, that conditions, whines and
policies of other countries, have a
great deal of effect upon us as farm-
ers, here in Huron or Bruce counties,
And, there is another glaring ex-
ample, During the past war, we sup-
plied Great Britain with millions of
pounds of butter, cheese and bacon,
hundreds of thousands of cases of
eggs, amounting to billions of dollars.
This came back to the farmer, and
he was able to be assured of 11 market,
for all he cared to produce. He im-
proved his methods, increased his pro-
duction, and still demand, far exceed-
ed the supply. Farming was a going
business during that period, a period
of emergency,
Now, the tide has turned, Great
Britain has no longer the money with
which to buy our supplies. Witness
the fact that this past week, we offer-
ed her 10 million pounds of Ontario
cheese at a reduced price, yet she was
forced to decline the offer, due to lack
of funds. The same can be said for
bacon, for eggs, for beef, for Canad-
ian apples and other products. They
want the food, they are hungry, but
their austerity program cannot permit
them to invest. So again, an internat-
ional condition, a foreign predica-
ment, has affected our farm income,
to the tune of millions of dollars, And
despite 'our accusations, it is a con-
dition that they cannot prevent, over
which they have no control.
Even greater evidence of the small-
ness of' our. world, is the list of coun-
tries with which we are still trading,
for it is a United Nations list in itself.
Practically every country, outside the
Iron Curtain, is a Q.otential customer
for our produce, Their degree of pur-
chasing power controls, the Ontario
farmer's purse-strings.

The Fanning Mill
by Bob Carbert
It is often the case, that when you
meet an old friend on the street quite
a distance from home, you say "A's a
small world isn't it?" And indeed it is
a small world, with so many Internat-
ional conditions affecting the farmer,
and his income, his degree of profit,
and his very livelihood.
Let's take for example, the present
livestock price structure. Despite the
fact that there are those who will tell
you that the farmers were getting too
much for their product anyway, and
they had been living in a fool's para-
dise, on a false economy who can
deny that the present depressed con-
dition of beef and pork, cheese and
dairy, products, can mostly be laid on
the doorstep of the American em-
bargo imposed following the outbreak
of foot and mouth disease.
We have been, ever since this mod-
ern era started, primarily an export-
ing country. We export cattle, hogs,
dairy products, pork products, and
other farm goods, to the States, and
other countries. But the American
market is not open to those cattle, and
hogs any more. And the surplus which
we have been accustomed to disposing
of to our American friends, has now
piled up in our own warehouse.
In other words, the surplus of pro-
duction, which used to be a little extra
profit, has turned out tp be the mill-
stone that has .dragged the general
price structure down. This is some-
thing over which we have no control,
