DOC:—And is this Mr. Smith still the publisher? Jack:—Oh no , , there have been several changes of ownership since 1921. The most recent one took place about a year and a half ago, when the Wenger Brothers became publishers, with Barry Wenger as editor, Mr. Wenger, formerly editor of the 'Mild- may Gazette, has' had many years of experience in the Ontario weekly field .... and under his expert guidance the paper has enjoyed increasing progress and prestige. Cities Service takes pleasure in saluting the Wingham Ad- vance-Times . . a highly respected member of Ontario's weekly news- papers with a record of 80 years ser- vice to its community! Doc:—Quite obviously, Wingham has enjoyed a colourful newspaper his- tory . . and this evening it also en- joys a rather unique distinction—for its saluting the town's oldest resident, We have to extend the honour in double measure, Jack: I'm afraid I don't follow you. This popular program has been featuring the stories of weekly newspapers and the oldest resident in each community, Jack:—This evening on the "paper and patriarch" feature of our Cities Service programme, we salute Wing- ham, Ontario, where the weekly press is an institution dating back 80 years to 1872. That's when Robert Matheson started The Wingham Times. Original. ly printed in Clinton, the Times was a strongly Liberal paper. Naturally, the Conservatives didn't like that too well , . so the following year, 1873, they persuaded Charles Cliff to estab- lish a competitive weekly called the Wingham Advance. For the vast two weeks a team of VI trained workrs :have been assisted in setting up the Payroll Savings Plan in some 1,860. of Ontario's largest plants with ..employees purchased bonds. It is ;expected this year that considerably more than 59 .per cent will take advantage of the Wan fand will PlirchaSe more than half' ,of the total raised in Canada through Payroll. "These employers feel that the development and mainten- ance of the habit of thrift is a public 'service." He said that because employ- ees have done such an outsanding job in subscribing to the plan in Ontario, the principal job of organizers will he. to show those who have never sub- scribed the advantages of this conven- lent way to save. The new bonds come in denomi- nations of $50, $100, $200, $500, $1,000 and $5,000 and pay interest rate of 3.44 per cent if held for their full term, higher than ever before, Canada Sav- ings Bonds differ from other govern- . ;Bent issues in that they may be cash- ed at their full olace value at any time but while retained by the purchaser pay a high rate of interest, WELLINGTON FIRE Insurance Company Est. 1840 An all Canadian Company which has faithfully served its policy holders for over a century. Eventually, though, this rivalry came to an end in 1921 . . when A. G. Smith, then the editor of the Advance, brought about an amalgamation under the name of "Advance-Times." Doc:—So the final victory went to the Conservatives. Jack: Now there's an odd thing, Doc, Although each of the papers had firmly upheld its political beliefs up to that time, after the amalgamation the Advance-Times became independ- ent polictically . . . and has enjoyed a very favorable reputation for its un- biased reporting of the news ever since. Doc; Well with competition elimin- ated, I suppose the Advance-Times did well for itself.
