DOC:—And is this Mr. Smith still
the publisher?
Jack:—Oh no , , there have been
several changes of ownership since
1921. The most recent one took place
about a year and a half ago, when the
Wenger Brothers became publishers,
with Barry Wenger as editor, Mr.
Wenger, formerly editor of the 'Mild-
may Gazette, has' had many years of
experience in the Ontario weekly field
.... and under his expert guidance the
paper has enjoyed increasing progress
and prestige. Cities Service takes
pleasure in saluting the Wingham Ad-
vance-Times . . a highly respected
member of Ontario's weekly news-
papers with a record of 80 years ser-
vice to its community!
Doc:—Quite obviously, Wingham has
enjoyed a colourful newspaper his-
tory . . and this evening it also en-
joys a rather unique distinction—for
its saluting the town's oldest resident,
We have to extend the honour in
double measure,

SALUTED BY
RADIO SHOW
We are reprnting here, by request,
the complete script of the Ontario
Patriarchs and Papers program which
broadcast recently over CFRB and
CKNX. This popular program has
been featuring the stories of weekly
newspapers and the oldest resident in
each community,
Jack:—This evening on the "paper
and patriarch" feature of our Cities
Service programme, we salute Wing-
ham, Ontario, where the weekly press
is an institution dating back 80 years
to 1872. That's when Robert Matheson
started The Wingham Times. Original.
ly printed in Clinton, the Times was
a strongly Liberal paper. Naturally,
the Conservatives didn't like that too
well , . so the following year, 1873,
they persuaded Charles Cliff to estab-
lish a competitive weekly called the
Wingham Advance.
Doc:—But surely Wingham was too
barn bas two old residents, both .ea-

and although she lost her husband

to live in the same house on Minter

purchase of bonds has been remark-
ably, effective, Individual purchases of
bonds have almost doubled since the
Bret series went on sale in 1946 and
today more than 90 per cent of .Can-
ada's largest employers make the Plan
available to their employees;" Mr.
'Venn.* said. "These employers feel
that the development and mainten-
ance of the habit of thrift is a public
'service." He said that because employ-
ees have done such an outsanding job
in subscribing to the plan in Ontario,
the principal job of organizers will he.

scribed the advantages of this conven-
lent way to save.
The new bonds come in denomi-
nations of $50, $100, $200, $500, $1,000
and $5,000 and pay interest rate of

Doe: To the day! Mrs. Bosman was
born near Newmarket . and her
husband was a farmer, too, for a
while. Later when they moved to Blue,
vale he switched to making cement
tiles. Later they moved to Wingham.
Mrs. Bosman has been a widow for
the past four years . . . . but she is
the proud matriarch of quite a large
family numbering 2 sons, 2 daughters,
11 grandchildren and 16 great-grand-
children!
Jack: Golly ... I just can't get over
the coincidence, Two ladies born on
the same day 95 years ago/ but in dif-
ferent places . . . both spending their
old age in the same little town.
Doe: It's really an unusual situation,
isn't it? And Cities Service is very
happy to offer double the usual good
wishes to Mrs. W. M. Dawson and
Mrs. L. H. Bosnian. May they both
continue to be the grand old ladies
of Wingham for a long time to come!
Jack: And since there are two of
them, you can make that double for
me! Also . . both Mrs, Dawson and
Mrs. Bosman will be presented with

times being published by Liberal
M.P.'s—but each firmly adhered to its
political viewpoint through the years.
Eventually, though, this rivalry came
to an end in 1921 . . when A. G.
Smith, then the editor of the Advance,
brought about an amalgamation under
the name of "Advance-Times."
Doc:—So the final victory went to
the Conservatives.
Jack: Now there's an odd thing,
Doc, Although each of the papers had
firmly upheld its political beliefs up
to that time, after the amalgamation
the Advance-Times became independ-
ent polictically . . . and has enjoyed
a very favorable reputation for its un-
biased reporting of the news ever
since.
Doc; Well with competition elimin-
ated, I suppose the Advance-Times
did well for itself.
Jack:—Yes, as you might expect,
circulation increased encouragingly,
and to further consolidate its position
in the district, the paper later absorb-
ed two other local weeklies, the Gorrie
Vidette and the Wroxeter News.
